Student answer (Band 7.0)

n some areas of the US, a curfew is imposed on teenagers, meaning that they are not allowed to go outside after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult. In my opinion, this is a positive development because it can protect teenagers from potential dangers and encourage them to maintain a healthy routine.

To begin with, one significant reason for imposing a curfew is that teenagers may not be fully aware of the risks associated with being outside late at night. As a result, they can become more vulnerable to crime and other dangerous situations. For instance, crimes such as assault and sexual abuse are more likely to occur at night when there are fewer people around and less supervision. Therefore, restricting teenagers from going outside alone during these hours can provide them with greater protection and contribute to their overall safety.

Another important reason is the health and well-being of growing teenagers. Young people need sufficient sleep to support their physical and mental development. If they regularly stay outside late at night, they may not get the recommended amount of sleep, which can affect their concentration, mood and overall health. For example, teenagers who follow a consistent nighttime routine are more likely to feel energetic and focused during the day. However, if they need to go out for an important reason, having an adult accompany them is a sensible precaution.

In conclusion, I believe that imposing a nighttime curfew on teenagers is a beneficial measure. Although young people should gradually develop independence, reasonable restrictions can protect them from potential dangers and encourage healthier daily routines.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position on teenage curfews and providing relevant, well-supported reasons. The introduction clearly states your opinion that the curfew is a positive development. Body paragraph one thoroughly explores the protective benefits of the curfew, citing specific dangers such as assault and reduced supervision at night. Body paragraph two extends the argument to health and well-being, explaining the link between adequate sleep and academic or physical performance. Ideas are well-developed and supported with appropriate explanations and examples, fulfilling all requirements for a Band 7.0 or higher.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction, followed by two well-structured body paragraphs, and a concise conclusion. You make effective use of cohesive devices to guide the reader through your arguments, such as 'To begin with', 'As a result', 'For instance', and 'Another important reason'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing throughout the text is clear. Cohesion is managed well, placing the response solidly in the Band 7 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision. You successfully use less common lexical items and collocations appropriate to the topic, such as 'potential dangers', 'vulnerable to crime', 'consistent nighttime routine', and 'sensible precaution'. While the vocabulary is not overly complex or sophisticated enough to reach a Band 8, there are no noticeable errors in word choice or spelling. The vocabulary is entirely adequate to convey your ideas smoothly and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your grammar is accurate and demonstrates a good control of sentence structures. You successfully incorporate a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as conditional and subordinate clauses like 'although young people should gradually develop independence, reasonable restrictions can protect them...'. There is a high frequency of error-free sentences throughout the essay, and punctuation is handled correctly. While the variety of complex structures is somewhat standard rather than wide-ranging, the grammatical control displayed easily satisfies the Band 7 descriptors.
