Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt regarding curfews for teenagers by presenting an opinion and supporting ideas, though the argument is somewhat confused by phrasing. In the introduction, the writer states, 'this essay will discuss both views as far as i am concerned i am in favour of,' which conflates a discussion essay format with a direct opinion response. The body paragraphs attempt to provide reasons, such as public safety concerns involving homeless individuals and substance abuse, and counter-arguments regarding well-policed areas like Calgary. However, the supporting examples lack clarity and rely on vague generalisations, such as 'In news of NYC - a newz channel of new york city, a survey mention that ration of injured adolescent.' While all parts of the task are addressed, the ideas are under-developed and lack clear logical support, placing the response firmly at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is divided into four paragraphs, showing an attempt at a standard essay structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, overall progression is hindered by awkward transitions and repetitive sentence structures. Cohesive devices are frequently misused or overly mechanical, such as 'To commence with,' 'To explain it,' and 'one the other hand.' Paragraphing is used to separate main points, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak due to disjointed sentences and unclear referencing, particularly in sentences like 'As a result it is prove that all teens need to stay safe at night time at home with their adults.' These issues reflect the characteristics of Band 5, where organisation is present, but progression lacks clarity and cohesion is frequently faulty or inadequate.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with frequent errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation that occasionally impede communication. Examples of inaccurate lexical choices include 'debated atmosphere' instead of tense atmosphere, 'drogue' instead of drug users, 'smock' instead of smoke, and 'peace office' instead of police officer. The writer also struggles with basic collocations, writing 'zero chances of curfew' and 'ration of injured adolescent' instead of proportion or rate. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a basic topic-related meaning, the numerous inaccuracies in spelling and word choice keep the lexical score at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex clauses. Grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('downtown cores of city... held a massive curfew'), tense inconsistencies ('it is prove that'), and missing articles or prepositions ('in city of calgary'). Punctuation is also problematic, with incorrect capitalization and spacing around commas and periods. Because complex structures are frequently inaccurate and frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, this performance corresponds to a Band 5.0 for grammatical range and accuracy.
