Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt regarding curfews for teenagers, stating a position that teenagers should not be out after a specific time unless accompanied by an adult. However, the development of ideas is heavily hindered by repetition and a failure to directly answer the prompt's core question with coherent arguments. Instead of developing logical reasons regarding crime, safety, or parental responsibility, the body paragraphs loop back onto vague phrases about well-being, lifestyle, and social connections without deep elaboration. Furthermore, the writer repeats the prompt text itself in the introduction and conclusion as a standalone statement rather than paraphrasing or building upon it. This falls short of fully extending and supporting ideas. Consequently, the performance aligns with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework. However, the overall progression of ideas is weak. The second and third paragraphs lack clear topic development and contain repetitive statements, such as 'which can potentially lead to better physical and mental health' and 'contribute to a healthier and more balanced lifestyle'. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as the frequent reliance on 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently', which often connect sentences that do not logically flow from one to the next. Referencing is also unclear in places, such as 'A clear example of this can be seen in teenagers, who did not come out nights.' These issues place the response firmly at Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited and repetitive vocabulary range. Throughout the text, basic words and phrases are reused frequently, such as 'well-being', 'lifestyle', 'healthier', and 'teenagers'. There are also several notable vocabulary and spelling errors, including 'teanagers' instead of 'teenagers', 'is need to be imposed' instead of 'needs to be imposed', and redundant phrasing like 'contemporary society of of the US'. While the reader can generally deduce the intended meaning, the lack of flexibility and precision, alongside the persistent spelling and word choice inaccuracies, reflects the descriptors for Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the essay. The writer attempts some complex sentence structures, but these attempts are frequently faulty or ungrammatical. For example, the opening sentence 'A 'curfew' for teanagers at night time is need to be imposed has become a matter of considerable debate...' contains severe structural errors, combining a passive infinitive structure with an active verb phrase incorrectly. There are also persistent punctuation and agreement errors, such as 'teenagers's' with a double possessive marker. Simple sentences are mixed with flawed complex forms, and errors frequently cause difficulty and confusion for the reader. This performance corresponds to Band 5.
