Student answer (Band 7.0)

A curfew for teenagers at night has become a matter of considerable debate in contemporary society, particularly in the US. I believe that teenagers should not be allowed to be outdoors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult. This essay will examine the key reasons behind this view and consider its broader implications.

One significant reason is that having a curfew can have a direct impact on teenagers' physical and mental well-being. This is largely because it can help teenagers reduce stress and maintain a healthier lifestyle. Furthermore, it can improve teenagers' overall well-being, which can potentially lead to better physical and mental health. For instance, teenagers who get enough sleep at night may feel healthier and more satisfied with their lives. Consequently, this can contribute to a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.

Another compelling argument is that the safety of young people can have broader implications for society as a whole. More specifically, a curfew can help protect teenagers and can also reduce the risk of dangerous situations. Moreover, this can strengthen social connections, improve people's quality of life and contribute to a more stable community. A clear example of this can be seen in teenagers who stay at home at night instead of going out alone. As a result, young people may be safer and their families may feel more secure, which demonstrates the wider impact of this issue.

In conclusion, I believe that teenagers should not be allowed to be outdoors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult. Ultimately, the potential effects on their health, safety and society should be carefully considered when determining the most appropriate approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an opinion in the introduction and reiterating it in the conclusion. The candidate discusses reasons related to physical and mental well-being, as well as broader societal safety. However, the development of ideas leans towards repetition and circular phrasing rather than deep extension. For instance, the statement 'help teenagers reduce stress and maintain a healthier lifestyle' is immediately followed by 'improve teenagers' overall well-being, which can potentially lead to better physical and mental health,' without introducing distinct supporting points or concrete real-world examples. Consequently, the ideas remain somewhat broad and under-developed, aligning best with a Band 6.5 descriptor where the task is addressed, but certain arguments lack sufficient depth and specific illustration.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression with a recognizable introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', 'Consequently', and 'More specifically' are employed to guide the reader through the text. However, some of the referencing and logical transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, particularly in how consecutive sentences rehash similar concepts about health and safety without significantly moving the argument forward. Overall, the organizational structure is coherent and easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 7.0 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate and generally appropriate for the task. The writer successfully incorporates functional phrasing such as 'contemporary society', 'broader implications', and 'compelling argument'. However, the range of vocabulary is somewhat restricted, and the reliance on repetitive wording—such as repeating 'well-being', 'healthier lifestyle', and 'teenagers' multiple times within short spans—prevents the lexical score from reaching higher bands. There are no spelling errors, and word choices communicate the intended meaning clearly, which fits the Band 6.5 criteria nicely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates good control over sentence structures, successfully blending simple and complex forms. Examples like 'This is largely because it can help teenagers reduce stress and maintain a healthier lifestyle' and conditional-style framing show competence. There are frequent error-free sentences throughout the response, and punctuation is handled correctly. While the grammatical structures are not exceptionally diverse or adventurous, the control over the structures attempted is reliable, with no major errors impeding communication, justifying a Band 7.0.
