Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some areas of the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, therefore, youngsters are not allowed to stay out doors at night, unless they are accompanied by an adult. In my perspective, this trend has both positive and negative outcomes as being accompanied by an adult ensures that teenagers are safe at night, however is also restricts their freedom.

To begin with, when youngsters are accompanied by an adult, it makes them safe from various criminal acitivities happening across the US such as kidnapping, gunshots and robbery, as criminals often avoid to attack adults. Secondly, teenagers are not fully mature to understand the long term impact of some bad practices such as drug consumption, therefore they are likely to fall into the trap of drug addiction for the enjoyment. However, if they are supervised by an adult it ensures their safety.

On the other hand, if teenagers are supevised by adults at night, it restricts their freedom. They might feel being controlled, therefore it could negatively imapct their confidence and morale. Furthermore, if they are accomapined by adults during nights, they will become dependent on them and might be afraid to face the difficult situations by themselves. For example, according to a survey conducted by BBC World Service, it has been conculded that the teenagers who are accompanied by their guardians when going outdoors, have more tenedncy to become introvert than the ones who were sent outdoors by themselves.

In conclusion, although accompaning teenagers outdoors ensures their safety from various crimes and bad practices, it also act as an obstacle in their personality development. Therefore, a careful consideration should be taken into account.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear personal opinion regarding youth curfews. The writer identifies both positive aspects, such as protection from criminal activities and the mitigation of bad practices like drug addiction, and negative aspects, including restricted freedom and potential impacts on confidence. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the reference to a BBC World Service survey regarding introversion. The position is maintained clearly throughout the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. While some arguments could benefit from further depth, the response meets all the core requirements of the task effectively, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction, moving to two well-defined body paragraphs covering opposing views, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. However, there are minor issues with referencing and punctuation, such as comma splices in the opening sentence ('...imposed, therefore, youngsters...'), which prevent the cohesion from being entirely seamless. Paragraphing is used appropriately, ensuring the overall structure remains coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'criminal activities', 'personality development', and 'long term impact'. However, there are a few noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'acitivities' instead of 'activities', 'stay out doors' instead of 'outdoors', and 'conculded' instead of 'concluded'. Furthermore, expressions like 'fall into the trap... for the enjoyment' sound slightly unnatural in collocated terms. Nevertheless, communication is never impeded by these inaccuracies, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and conditional structures, such as 'if they are supervised by an adult it ensures their safety'. There are, however, several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text, including punctuation errors (comma splices in the introduction and first body paragraph) and minor agreement or preposition issues, such as 'it also act' instead of 'acts', 'acomapined' instead of 'accompanied', and 'tenedncy' instead of 'tendency'. Despite these frequent minor slips, the meaning remains clear and sentences are generally easy to follow, supporting a Band 6 score.
