IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some areas of the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, in which teenagers are not allowed to be out of doors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult.
What is your opinion about this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Teenage curfews are introduced in some parts of the US to prevent young people from being outside late at night without adult supervision. In my opinion, such rules can be beneficial because they can protect teenagers from dangerous situations and encourage them to develop a healthier routine. However, reasonable exceptions should be made for work, education and emergencies.
Firstly, teenagers may face greater risks when they are outside late at night. There may be fewer people around to help them if they experience problems, and parents may not always know where their children are. A curfew can therefore encourage teenagers to return home at a reasonable time. For example, if a teenager wants to attend a late-night event, being accompanied by a parent or another responsible adult could provide additional safety.
Secondly, a curfew may help young people maintain a better daily routine. Teenagers generally need to attend school in the morning, complete homework and get enough sleep. Staying outside until very late can affect their sleep and make it difficult for them to concentrate at school the following day. Having a reasonable time to return home may encourage them to manage their social and academic lives more effectively.
However, curfews should not be unnecessarily strict. Some teenagers have part-time jobs that finish late, while others may need to travel home after studying or participating in school activities. Therefore, exceptions should be provided for legitimate reasons rather than applying the rule without considering individual circumstances.
In conclusion, I support reasonable curfews for teenagers because they can improve safety and encourage healthier routines. Nevertheless, teenagers should still be allowed to be outside after the specified time when they have a valid reason.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student fully addresses all parts of the task by giving a clear personal opinion on teenage curfews and supporting it with relevant reasons. The position is maintained throughout the response. In the introduction, the writer states that curfews can protect teenagers and encourage healthier routines while reasonably suggesting exceptions for work, education, and emergencies. The body paragraphs effectively extend and support these ideas. For instance, the second paragraph explains how curfews reduce risks late at night and promote safety through adult accompaniment, while the third paragraph discusses the benefits of maintaining a proper daily sleep routine. Although the ideas are somewhat general, they are well-developed and directly answer the prompt. Therefore, the response achieves a solid Band 7.0 for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to two supporting arguments, a counter-consideration regarding exceptions, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively and appropriately, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. Reference words like 'such rules' and 'the rule' are managed well to connect ideas across sentences without mechanical repetition. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, contributing to an easy flow of information. Overall, the structural progression matches the requirements for a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'adult supervision', 'legitimate reasons', and 'individual circumstances' show an awareness of appropriate academic and general writing style. Less common items are used fairly well, though the overall vocabulary is somewhat standard rather than sophisticated. There are occasional generalisations, but word choice is generally accurate, and spelling is correct throughout the text. The lexical range is adequate to convey precise meanings smoothly, fitting the Band 7.0 descriptor well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student uses a variety of complex sentence structures effectively, such as conditional structures ('if a teenager wants to attend') and subordinate clauses ('while others may need to travel'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and the control of grammar and punctuation is good throughout the essay. While minor slips or repetitive sentence starters occasionally surface, there are no systematic errors that impede communication. The combination of simple and complex forms executed with good accuracy warrants a Band 7.0 score for grammatical range and accuracy.
