Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some areas of the United States, there is a rule that teenagers are not allowed to go outside after a certain time at night without an adult. This rule is made mainly for the safety of young people. In my opinion, I agree with this idea to some extent because it can protect teenagers, although it can also create some problems.
One main advantage of having a curfew is that it can keep teenagers safe from dangerous situations. At night, there is more chance of teenagers becoming a victim of crime or getting into an accident. If they have to come back home before a specific time, parents can feel more relaxed about their children. For example, teenagers who stay outside very late can sometimes meet with bad people or become involved in activities which are not suitable for them. Therefore, a reasonable curfew can help to reduce these risks.
However, strict curfews can also have some disadvantages. Teenagers are becoming adults and they need to learn how to make their own decisions. If parents or authorities always control when they can go outside, they may not develop enough responsibility. For instance, some teenagers may have a part-time job, attend evening classes or visit their friends, and they might need to stay outside after the curfew time. In these situations, a strict rule can cause problems for responsible teenagers.
In conclusion, I believe that curfews can be useful for protecting teenagers from danger, especially during late hours. However, these rules should not be too strict because teenagers also need freedom to develop their responsibility. A balance between safety and independence would be a better approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response clearly addresses all parts of the task by discussing the topic of teenage curfews, presenting a well-developed opinion, and providing relevant supporting reasons and examples. The writer successfully balances both sides of the argument, acknowledging the safety benefits in the second paragraph while addressing the drawbacks regarding independence and responsibility in the third. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay and reinforced in the conclusion. The ideas are extended appropriately, meeting the criteria for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from introduction to body paragraphs discussing advantages and disadvantages, and finally to a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'One main advantage', 'However', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is managed sufficiently and appropriately, maintaining clear relationships between ideas, which justifies a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms such as 'responsibility', 'authorities', 'part-time job', and 'independence'. There are attempts to use less common expressions, such as 'becoming a victim of crime' and 'balance between safety and independence'. While the vocabulary is generally precise enough to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, it occasionally leans towards simpler or more repetitive phrasing ('dangerous situations', 'bad people'), fitting comfortably within the Band 6.0 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional-style structures and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'If they have to come back home before a specific time, parents can feel more relaxed'). Grammatical control is generally quite good, with punctuation handled well throughout. While there are a few minor slips or slightly repetitive structures, the majority of sentences are clear and error-free, meaning communication is never impeded. This performance aligns well with a Band 6.5 score.
