Student answer (Band 6.0)

In parts of the US, there are rules on how long the kids can stay outside without any adult supervision at night and i strongly agree on putting a time restriction on children for their own benefit.

With an increasing rate of thefts, burgulary, kidnapping, and physical abuse to children, it is not safe for the kids to be hanging out alone at certain hours of night.

Kids and teenagers are innocent, anyone can fool them easily and take advantage of them.

I have heard a new type of theft going on these days, when a stranger sees a child alone they come over to them, start making small talks and get friendly towards them and ask them information about their parents, Things like; where do they go to work, or what time do they go to work, when do they come back, information about number of family members. They ask as much detail as they possibly can, they even ask wheather they have a theft alarm installed in their house or not. Now they have all the information they need to make a smooth robbery without getting caught. The surprising thing is that they get all this information so quickly and casually that the kids don't even remember to mention this particular interaction with their parents.

One of my friend chose a similar topic for her thesis and she concluded that girls are twice as much victim to kidnapping than boys. There is an entire mafia running in parts of US, where they kidnap little girls and sell them to different people.

We have an obligation towards our children to keep them protected from any unfortunate situation. They might not understand the rules now but they will be grateful to us in the longer run. They say it is better to stay safe than sorry and imposing a curfew is all about keeping our kids safe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly by presenting a clear personal opinion that strongly agrees with imposing a curfew on children. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, particularly in the third paragraph, where the writer provides a detailed example of how strangers gather information from unaccompanied children. While some parts rely on generalisations and personal anecdotes rather than broader socio-economic arguments, the main tenets of the task are adequately covered. The arguments regarding safety, stranger danger, and parental responsibility are well-suited to the General Training Task 2 format, resulting in a solid performance that fits the Band 6.0 to 6.5 profile.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as the dangers of crime, the specific scenario involving stranger interactions, and the statistical anecdote. However, cohesive devices are occasionally weak or absent, and referencing is sometimes imprecise, as seen with sentences starting abruptly or lacking smooth transitions. For instance, transitioning between paragraphs could be improved with better signposting language. Furthermore, some sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation pacing. Overall cohesion is functional yet somewhat mechanical, aligning with a Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas about child safety and curfews. There are attempts to use less common and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'supervision', 'obligation', and 'unfortunate situation'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors, such as 'burgulary' instead of 'burglary' and 'wheather' instead of 'whether', alongside minor collocation and word choice issues like 'make small talks' and 'twice as much victim'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding overall communication, placing the performance securely at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-style reasoning. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several run-on sentences and comma splices, such as 'Kids and teenagers are innocent, anyone can fool them easily...' and issues with capitalization, such as the lowercase 'i' in the opening sentence. Preposition and article errors also occur occasionally, for instance, 'in the longer run' instead of 'in the long run'. While complex structures are attempted, they are frequently faulty, leading to errors that occasionally demand extra attention from the reader, matching the Band 5.0 descriptor for grammar.
