Student answer (Band 6.0)

A curfew is imposed at the night time in a few areas of the US, in which teenagers are not allowed to go outdoors after a specific time at night, unless they are accompanied by an adult. I strongly agree with this idea.

Safety of children specially teenagers is a very important yet a sensitive matter in any society specially in a society like US where crime rate is very high. So, there are a few reason for my strong agreement with this curfew rule in some parts of the US. These reasons include the presence of potential dangers such as criminals, wild animals and rash drivers. Teenager are not well-aware of these dangers so they should always be accompanied with an adult when going outside at night. The most important factor is the presence of potential criminals during late hours. These criminals, always wait till it gets dark to start their activities and an alone teenager walking down a quiet street is an easy, weaker target for them. Moreover, if a child does not know how to act in a panic situation like getting attacked by someone, it could end in bizzare consequences. For example, recently a news was reported where two teenagers were walking in a quiet street and a pick-pocket attacked them but they did not know how to act in that situation so they started to resist him which resulted in him getting panicked and shooting on of them in the leg while fleeing the scene.

Another important reason is the presence of wild animals like stray dogs at night time, these animals become more dangerous during late hours and roam freely across quiet streets which can be very dangerous. For instance, recently one of my cousin's daughter who is fifteen, was attacked by a stray dog when she was walking towards a nearby market in Houston, Texas. She was badly injured but thankfully was rushed to the hospital on time.

In conclusion, I absolutely agree with this curfew rule because it is in alignment with the safety of our children so they should always be in presence of an adult when going out at night. In addition, I request parents to educate their children more on the potential dangers that exist in society not only at night but also the day time and children should be well-aware of their surroundings.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response clearly addresses the task by stating a strong opinion in favor of curfews for teenagers. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended with reasons and relevant examples, such as the anecdote about the pick-pocket and the stray dog incident in Houston. However, some arguments tend to over-generalize or rely on slightly hyperbolic scenarios, which places the development at the Band 7 level. All parts of the prompt are addressed effectively, presenting a clear overall position with supporting arguments from personal knowledge and experience.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different supporting arguments, such as criminals and wild animals. Cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Another important reason', and 'In conclusion' are utilized to guide the reader through the text, although some referencing is a bit mechanical. Overall arrangement is coherent, earning a solid Band 6.5 to 7.0, with clear logical flow and adequate paragraph structuring.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'potential dangers', 'panic situation', and 'stray dog'. There are some minor word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'at the night time' instead of 'at night', and 'shooting on of them' instead of 'shooting one of them'. Less common items are attempted with reasonable success, though occasional inaccuracies in spelling ('bizzare') and phrasing are present, reflecting Band 6 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the response. There are examples of complex structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('unless they are accompanied by an adult', 'if a child does not know how to act'). However, several grammatical errors occur, including singular/plural mismatches like 'Teenager are not well-aware' and prepositions like 'shooting on of them'. While these errors do not impede communication, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching Band 7.
