IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some areas of the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, in which teenagers are not allowed to be out of doors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult.

What is your opinion about this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In some parts of the United States, teenagers are not allowed outdoors after a certain time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult. In my opinion, this is a reasonable rule because it may protect young people from dangerous situations and encourage responsible behaviour.

Firstly, teenagers may not have enough experience to recognise risks or respond appropriately to emergencies. When they are outside late at night, particularly in unfamiliar places, they could become vulnerable to harassment or violence. For example, a group of teenagers might visit a city centre to enjoy its nightlife without informing their parents. If one of them becomes separated from the group, they may struggle to find their way home or get help. An accompanying adult could help them avoid isolated areas, arrange safe transport and deal with unexpected problems. Therefore, adult supervision can provide valuable protection.

Secondly, a curfew may reduce opportunities for teenagers to participate in harmful activities without their parents’ knowledge. Some young people experience pressure from friends to experiment with smoking, alcohol or drugs. Although a curfew cannot completely prevent such behaviour, it can help parents establish clear boundaries and know where their children are at night. Furthermore, discussing the reasons behind these rules can encourage teenagers to make safer decisions.

However, curfews should be applied reasonably. Teenagers may need to return home late after school activities, part-time jobs or family events. Suitable exceptions would allow them to fulfil these responsibilities. Parents should also teach personal safety rather than rely entirely on restrictions.

In conclusion, I support nighttime curfews for teenagers because they may reduce exposure to unsafe situations and encourage parental involvement. Nevertheless, these rules should be combined with reasonable exceptions, open communication and guidance to help young people become responsible adults.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student presents a very clear and well-developed position throughout the response. The prompt is fully addressed by exploring both the protective benefits of curfews and the potential drawbacks if they are applied unreasonably. In the second and third paragraphs, ideas are well-extended with relevant examples, such as teenagers visiting city centres or facing peer pressure. The arguments regarding safety and boundaries are logically presented and effectively tie back to the central thesis. The response covers all aspects of the task with good depth, demonstrating the characteristics of a strong Band 7.5 or Band 8 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The text shows a clear logical organisation and progression from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is used very effectively, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct sub-topic (e.g., physical safety, peer pressure, and necessary exceptions). Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Furthermore', and 'However' are employed appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments. Referencing is clear throughout, and the overall arrangement makes the text easy to follow, fulfilling all the requirements for a solid Band 7.5 or Band 8.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items such as 'vulnerable to harassment', 'establish clear boundaries', and 'personal safety'. Word choice is generally precise, and collocations are natural (e.g., 'respond appropriately to emergencies'). There are no noticeable spelling errors or inappropriate word forms that impede communication. While it occasionally lacks the sophisticated, effortless flexibility of a Band 8, the lexical resource is strong and precise, easily matching Band 7 criteria.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response features a very good variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('If one of them becomes separated...') and concessive clauses ('Although a curfew cannot completely prevent...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled with a high degree of control. Minor slips are virtually absent, and grammatical structures are managed with confidence. The control over complex syntax and low frequency of errors firmly aligns with a Band 8 level.
