Student answer (Band 5.5)

Every nations are prioritize their citizens in an emergency situation like war, pandemics, etc. US government has introduced a "curfew" in some areas for particular time period, especially at night. In this, teenages are not permitted to go outside without an adult individual. Here, I will discuss my opinions on this kind of situation.

It is compulsory to follow guidelines of curfew, because government prioritize the safety of their citizens. For example, recently, In Iran-Israel war, they lost so many people in bomb blasts. These types of attacks happen during the night as no one aware. Therefore, it would be not recommened to teenagers to roam outside without their guardian, because they can risk their lives.

In addition, government may imposed strict rules at any time if situation goes wrong. As a result, there could be a chance to stuck at different locations. Without an adult person, it is hard to survive in night for a teenager. I remember the story of my friend, he told me that, during COVID pandemic, he was coming from the work at night and suddenly, government imposed the restriction to travel his area as they found the patient from the nearby location. Consequently, he spent whole night at his relative's house.

In conclusion, people should understand "curfew" guidelines are for their own safety. everyone should follow the rules and co operate with government to mitigate the risks from the dangerous situations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student addresses the prompt by expressing an opinion on adolescent curfews, citing safety and emergencies. However, the response has a few noticeable limitations. First, the length requirement of 250 words is not met, as the text contains only 237 words, which incurs a penalty under task achievement. Second, the examples provided shift oddly from local curfews to international geopolitical conflicts like the Iran-Israel war, which feels slightly disconnected from the core theme of standard teenage night curfews in the US. While a clear position is maintained throughout the essay, the development of ideas lacks full depth and local context. According to the band descriptors, this falls into the band 5.0 to 5.5 range, and given the under-length penalty combined with the slight digression in examples, a score of 5.0 is appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, showing a basic attempt at paragraphing. However, the logical progression is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions and confusing examples. For instance, the transition from government safety rules to the Iran-Israel war in the second paragraph lacks cohesive ties and logical continuity. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes mechanically or inappropriately, such as 'In this, teenages are not permitted' and 'Here, I will discuss my opinions'. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow of ideas needs tighter organization to achieve a higher band score. This performance aligns well with the band 6 descriptor for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey basic ideas about safety and emergencies. However, there are notable limitations and word-choice errors, such as 'Every nations are prioritize', 'stuck at different locations', and spelling errors like 'teenages', 'recommened', and 'co operate'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'mitigate' and 'emergency situation', but imprecise collocations and lexical inaccuracies occur frequently. Because the vocabulary range is limited and contains errors that occasionally draw the reader's attention, the lexical resource is best evaluated at band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors throughout the text. Examples of grammatical errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('Every nations are prioritize'), tense confusion ('government may imposed'), missing prepositions ('survive in night'), and awkward phrasing ('there could be a chance to stuck'). Punctuation is also occasionally faulty. These errors are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the profile of band 5 where frequent errors persist even though meaning is mostly communicated.
