IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some areas of the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, in which teenagers are not allowed to be out of doors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult.
What is your opinion about this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Recently, there has been a notice circulating in some parts of America, that the young kids who are not more than 18 years of age are not allowed to wander around after 10 p.m in the night unless and untill they are with their parents.
I firmly believe that the notice is the result of the recent mishaps happening in our neighborhood.
The increasing cases of human trafficking and drugs are causing a huge havoc in different areas.
The incident which took place around the midnight on Saturday of 4th at city grounds shook the whole
village when the girl was found drugged and thrown at the footpath in the most inhuman way.
It is easier for the parents to keep track on their children if they accompany them and also they do not have to worry whenever they want to go out and have fun. This way they can also spend their leisure time with their beloved ones and spend some quality time with their families and strengthen their bonds which has been hard to keep up with due to our hectic schedules at work.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
Your response presents a clear personal opinion regarding curfews for teenagers, supporting it with examples such as drug issues and human trafficking. However, there are significant limitations in your task fulfillment. First, you failed to meet the minimum length requirement, as your response contains only 186 words instead of the required 250 words. This under-length issue heavily restricts the development of your ideas. Furthermore, some of your arguments feel somewhat disjointed, and the examples provided, such as the specific Saturday incident, are a bit anecdotal and narrow in focus rather than addressing the broader policy of curfews comprehensively. To reach a higher band score, you must ensure you write at least 250 words and fully extend your arguments with broader societal analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
Your essay is divided into several short paragraphs, but the overall structure lacks a cohesive flow and logical progression. While you attempt to introduce a position in the introduction and support it in subsequent paragraphs, the paragraphing is fragmented, with single-sentence paragraphs such as 'The increasing cases of human trafficking and drugs are causing a huge havoc in different areas.' Additionally, the use of cohesive devices is minimal and basic. There are few linking words to guide the reader smoothly from your opening stance to your supporting arguments and final conclusion. To improve, you should group your ideas into coherent paragraphs with clear topic sentences and use a wider variety of cohesive markers to link your thoughts effectively.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate your general meaning, using terms like 'circulating', 'mishaps', and 'leisure time'. However, your lexical range is fairly limited for a Task 2 essay, and there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation. For example, using 'notice' instead of 'regulation' or 'law' sounds unnatural, and phrases like 'huge havoc' or 'thrown at the footpath' are imprecise. Furthermore, you rely heavily on basic everyday words and repeat certain terms rather than utilizing precise synonyms. To achieve a higher band score, you should incorporate less common lexical items, pay closer attention to natural collocations, and expand your vocabulary range to discuss social issues with greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Your grammar shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the relative clause in 'who are not more than 18 years of age' and conditional structures with 'unless and untill'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. You make noticeable errors, such as spelling 'until' with a double 'l' ('untill'), preposition errors like 'at 10 p.m in the night' instead of 'at night', and referencing errors like 'keep track on' instead of 'keep track of'. Additionally, punctuation and comma splices hinder readability in places. While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding your core message, their frequency places your grammar control firmly in the mid-band range. Focusing on sentence variety and proofreading for prepositions will help improve your score.
