Student answer (Band 6.0)

The government has imposed a curfew in some part of the USA, where young people are only allowed to go outside if they are accompanied by adults. This initiative has been taken to improve safety and security. In recent years, crimes has been continuously rising. Therefore, the government has to take such steps to deal with ongoing issues. This essay will discuss reasons behind such development.

To begin, there are several reasons why the government has to imposed such restrictions. The first and foremost reason is control the crime rate. In recent years, crime related activities have significantly increased at night. Homeless people often initiate robbery when they run out of money. They target vulnerable group to get money. It spread negative reputation of the country among the youth.

Another reason behind the restriction is to control on drugs related activities. Drug dealers and other criminals are openly roaming around the city at night. This safety concern was raised by citizens. For example, drug users in Philadelphia have been increased significantly which affects all citizens but young people are the future of nation and it is primary responsibility of government to protect them in such situations. Therefore, the government has decided to imposed such restrictions.

Conversely, some youngsters are unhappy with this initiatives. They say that such restriction is not long term sustainable solution. The government should increase the patrolling and camera survillence at night. Stopping them to go out is against the freedom.

To sum up, I personally believe that imposing restriction on teenagers movement at night is to improve awareness and safety. Regardless of individuals choice, citizens should follow rules and regulations. Overall, result shows some control over the crime after imposing curfew.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring the reasons for the curfew such as crime control and drug issues, while also acknowledging the opposing perspective about freedom and alternative solutions. A clear position is presented in the final paragraph. However, some ideas lack full extension and are slightly repetitive. For instance, the mention of homeless people and robbery in the second paragraph is somewhat under-developed and generalises broadly. Overall, the response meets the requirements of Band 6.0 because it addresses all parts of the task with relevant, albeit somewhat limited and repetitive, ideas and maintains a clear position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure introduction, body paragraphs addressing separate points, an opposing view, and a conclusion. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen with phrases like 'To begin' and 'Conversely'. There are also referencing issues, such as in the final paragraph where 'result shows some control' lacks a clear antecedent. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but the logical progression between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. These features correspond to a Band 6.0 performance under coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'curfew', 'vulnerable group', and 'survillence'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors (e.g., 'survillence' instead of 'surveillance', 'initiatives' misused as a plural/singular mismatch) and awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'control on drugs related activities' instead of 'drug-related activities'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, placing the response solidly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'where young people are only allowed...' and 'Although...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and subject-verb agreement, such as 'crimes has been continuously rising' instead of 'crime has been', 'government has to imposed' instead of 'impose', and 'stopping them to go out' instead of 'preventing them from going out'. Punctuation and article use also show recurrent errors. Because these errors occur frequently but rarely impede overall communication, the response fits the Band 5.5 to 6.0 profile, earning a Band 6.0.
