Student answer (Band 6.0)

The government has imposed a curfew in some parts of the USA, where young people are only allowed to go outside if they are accompanied by adults. This initiative has been taken to improve safety and security. In recent years, crime has been continuously rising. Therefore, the government has to take such steps to deal with ongoing issues. This essay will discuss reasons behind such development.

To begin, there are several reasons why the government has to impose such restrictions. The first and foremost reason is to control the crime rate. In recent years, crime related activities have significantly increased at night. Homeless people often initiate robbery when they run out of money. They target vulnerable groups to get money. It spread negative reputation of the country among the youth.

Another reason behind the restriction is to control on drug related activities. Drug dealers and other criminals are openly roaming around the city at night. This safety concern was raised by citizens. For example, drug users in Philadelphia have been increased significantly which affects all citizens but young people are the future of nation and it is primary responsibility of government to protect them in such situations. Therefore, the government has decided to impose such restrictions.

Conversely, some youngsters are unhappy with this initiatives. They say that such restriction is not viable for long term. The government should increase the patrolling and camera survillence at night. Stopping individuals to go out is against the freedom.

To sum up, I personally believe that imposing restriction on teenagers movement at night is good step to protect youth. Regardless of individuals choice, citizens should follow rules and regulations. Overall, result shows some control over the crime after imposing curfew.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the task by discussing the curfew on teenagers in the US and clearly states the writer's opinion. The essay outlines the reasons for the measure, such as controlling crime rates and drug-related activities, and touches upon counter-arguments from youngsters who value their freedom. However, the development of ideas tends to be somewhat superficial and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on homeless people and drug users lacks specific depth and strays slightly from a direct focus on teenagers. The position is maintained throughout, but the support for ideas remains basic, aligning best with Band 6 descriptors where all parts are addressed though some are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is arranged with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing a clear overall structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as crime control, drug-related concerns, and counter-arguments. However, referencing and cohesive devices can be somewhat mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of phrases like 'In recent years' and 'Another reason'. The logical progression is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions between sentences, such as moving from homeless individuals directly to the country's reputation. This places the performance firmly in the Band 6 category, where cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common phrases such as 'vulnerable groups', 'primary responsibility', and 'viable for long term'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'crime related activities' instead of 'crime-related activities' or simply 'crime', 'It spread negative reputation', and spelling errors like 'survillence' instead of 'surveillance'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band. The lexical resource is characteristic of Band 6, featuring an adequate range with some inaccuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, such as missing articles ('is good step' instead of 'is a good step'), incorrect prepositions ('control on drug related activities' instead of 'control of drug-related activities'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('drug users in Philadelphia have been increased'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains generally clear and communication is rarely impeded. This performance matches Band 6 descriptors, which highlight a mix of structures alongside frequent grammatical errors that rarely impede understanding.
