Student answer (Band 7.5)
In some parts of the United States, teenagers are not allowed to go outside after a certain time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult. Although some people believe that curfews are necessary to protect young people, I believe that reasonable curfews can be beneficial because they improve teenagers’ safety and encourage responsible behaviour.
One major advantage of a curfew is that it can protect teenagers from dangerous situations. At night, there may be a higher risk of accidents, crime, or involvement with harmful activities. By requiring teenagers to be home by a particular time, parents and authorities can reduce these risks. For example, a teenager who is expected to return home by 10 p.m. is less likely to spend late hours in unsafe places without adult supervision.
Another benefit is that curfews can help young people develop good habits and understand the importance of rules. Teenagers need some independence, but they also need guidance from parents and society. A reasonable curfew can encourage them to manage their time properly, get enough sleep, and focus on school and other responsibilities. For instance, students who return home at a sensible time are more likely to be rested and prepared for school the following day.
However, I do not think curfews should be excessively strict. Older teenagers may sometimes need to stay out later for legitimate reasons, such as attending a school event, working a part-time job, or travelling home with friends. Therefore, parents and authorities should allow reasonable exceptions and consider a teenager’s age and circumstances.
In conclusion, I believe that reasonable teenage curfews can provide important safety benefits and teach young people responsibility. However, these rules should be flexible enough to recognise teenagers’ growing independence and genuine needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The student presents a clear position throughout the response regarding teenage curfews, stating that reasonable curfews are beneficial for safety and responsibility. All parts of the task prompt are fully addressed. The body paragraphs present well-developed ideas supported by relevant examples, such as teenagers returning home by 10 p.m. to avoid unsafe places. Furthermore, the counter-argument and acknowledgment that curfews should not be excessively strict adds depth and demonstrates fully developed ideas, meeting the criteria for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to safety benefits, behavioral benefits, a qualifying counter-argument, and a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One major advantage', 'Another benefit', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are managed effectively and contribute to the overall flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout the essay, demonstrating skillful structural control.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for a general task. Phrases like 'unsupervised', 'legitimate reasons', and 'growing independence' show a sufficient range with some awareness of collocation. While the vocabulary is largely standard rather than highly sophisticated, it is used accurately to convey precise meanings without impeding communication. Word choices such as 'sensible time' and 'excessively strict' are natural and effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The writing features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or relative clauses like 'unless they are accompanied by an adult' and 'students who return home at a sensible time'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is consistently strong. Punctuation and tense usage are accurate throughout, with only occasional minor slips that do not impede communication in any way.
