Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some areas of the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, in which teenagers are not allowed to be out doors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanies by an adult. I agree with the approach of the US government. Teenagers should not be allowed to be out of the doors at night unless they are accompanied by an adult. It is important to understand that there is always a reason behind a state's decision. The state is the most superior authority and all actions taken by the state are always for the benefit of its residents. Therefore, all actions of the state must be followed by its residents.
Furthermore, in some areas of the US, the crime rate is very high, therefore; it is important for teenagers to not leave their doors without an adult at night. Additionally, I believe that teenagers are not sensible enough to take best decisions for themself. They are easy targets for the criminals. For example, a large amount of drugs are supplied to teenagers because they are not mature enough to understand its negative impact on their lives. Therefore, criminals are making money at the cost of the lives of teenagers.
Moreover, in such areas, other than becoming a victim, there are also reasonable chances of teenagers getting involved in criminal activities. As mentioned earlier, teenagers are easy targets, therfore; it is easier for criminals to use them to support their illegal activities.
A large number of rape, drug trafficking, and human trafficking cases are pilling up in the US courts every day. Therefore, to protect teenagers from such activities and risks, it is important for the state to take strict decisions, as at the end of the day it is for the safety of the its residents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt directly by taking a clear and consistent position in agreement with the curfew for teenagers. The candidate outlines several relevant reasons to support this stance, such as high crime rates and the vulnerability of teenagers to criminal exploitation and drug trafficking. However, the reasoning tends to rely on repetition and over-generalisation rather than fully extended, nuanced arguments. For instance, the assertion that the state is always the most superior authority and acts solely for the benefit of residents is stated broadly without deeper exploration. While all parts of the task are addressed, the ideas would benefit from more varied examples and deeper development to reach the higher band levels. Overall, the task is adequately handled and the main position is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from the introductory stance to specific arguments regarding safety, vulnerability, and crime statistics. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as drug risks and broader criminal involvement. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and faulty. For example, punctuation errors with transitional markers like 'therefore;' detract from smooth flow. Additionally, referencing is occasionally repetitive, relying heavily on words like 'therefore' and 'thus' to link sentences. While the logical structure is understandable, the use of cohesive devices lacks flexibility and precision, placing this response firmly in the mid-band range.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their opinion on crime rates, safety, and teenagers. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'human trafficking', 'vulnerability', and 'illegal activities'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'pilling up' instead of 'piling up', 'leave their doors' instead of 'leave their homes', and 'take best decisions' instead of 'make the best decisions'. Furthermore, spelling and word-form errors occur, including 'themself' instead of 'themselves' and 'therfore' instead of 'therefore'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a limited and developing lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional or dependent clauses such as 'unless they are accompanied by an adult' and 'to protect teenagers from such activities and risks'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'unless they are accompanies' and pronoun referencing mistakes like 'for the safety of the its residents'. Punctuation errors are also present, particularly with semicolon misuse before conjunctions, such as 'high, therefore; it is important'. While the meaning remains clear despite these errors, the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from achieving a higher band score.
