Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, it is often seen in some parts of the USA that teenagers are not allowed to go out doors especially in nights unless they are accompanied by an adult. I personally believe while looking at the crime rates and culture that the USA have, it is completely reasonable. As this move protects teenagers and help them to stay away from a bad company.

The first and foremost reason to support the given statement is security. There are so many places located in the USA where the crime rate is super high. People are often seen on these places take drugs on daily basis, they stabb other people for money and food, thus it gets critical to lock teenagers inside a house or allowed to go out only if they are accompanied by adult for their protection and security.

The second reason could be to protect them from a bad company. To elaborate, the USA is known for its night life, and people often feel vibrant when they are living in the USA. There are plenty of pubs and clubs are there where people often go to chill and relax themselves, and they often drink, smoke and do so many things which are neither good for health nor wealth. Therefore, if teenagers are allowed to go outside during the nights alone, there is a high chance they may get influence by these things and spoil their life. Thus, accompamied by an adult may make them understand to make right choices in life.

To conclude, yes, it is completely understandable and a valid point to say that noone should be locked in or has to have company while they go out, and teenagers are not diffrerent in it. However, when people look at the situation in the USA and consequences it may have on teenagers, it is fair to say and to get agreed that teenagers must be accompanied by an adult for their own protection and to save their life from the bad company.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a personal opinion regarding curfews for teenagers in the USA and supporting it with relevant reasons. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, reflecting a standard where main points are presented but lack deeper extension. For instance, the argument regarding security is supported with examples like crime rates and drug use, but the elaboration on nightlife and bad company in the third paragraph becomes slightly repetitive rather than fully exploring nuanced arguments. To reach a higher band, the ideas would need more thorough expansion and deeper exploration of the social implications of curfews.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and each body paragraph focuses on a distinct main point. Information and ideas are logically sequenced. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or faulty, particularly with transitions like 'The first and foremost reason' and 'The second reason could be', which are somewhat formulaic. Referencing and substitution are occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun reference in phrases like 'people often feel vibrant when they are living in the USA'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas, but achieving a higher band requires more flexible, natural-sounding cohesive devices and smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common lexical items such as 'curfew', 'security', and 'consequences'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect a more limited control of resource. Examples include 'go out doors' instead of 'outdoors', 'in nights' instead of 'at night', 'stabb' instead of 'stab', 'on daily basis' instead of 'on a daily basis', and 'accompamied' instead of 'accompanied'. Furthermore, awkward collocations such as 'good for health nor wealth' and 'get influence' occur. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the score because precision and accurate word formation are lacking.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as in 'where people often go to chill'. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, including verb agreement and article omissions, such as 'culture that the USA have' and 'allowed to go out only if they are accompanied by adult'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning generally remains clear. To move to a higher band, the writer would need to produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences utilizing more advanced and varied complex structures with consistent control over grammar.
