Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely observed that in a few parts of the US, a 'curfew' is introduced against youngsters since they are not permitted to go outside without adult's company. I believe this has made to increase the safety of young people as crime rate is increasing exponentially.

One reason is that youngsters are most prominent victims of any crime in the US. Although the police is there to protect all the americans, the violence, mass killing and human trafficking is not reducing as required. This is because teenagers directly face ramifications because they are not mature enough to observe and take appropriate steps whenever they interact with any crime related incidents. To illustrate, gangsters mainly target young ones for kidnapping for ransom or child prostitution. Therefore, an adult either parents or brother is much needed for their safety, especially when they are going outside at night.

Another reason is that adults may create a safe zone to protect them from any uncertainity. Despite that teenagers may not able to take certains decisions on their own, they tend to make unacceptable decisions, when they are alone. For example, they are more likely to drink during night in pubs or on parties, regardless of thinking about legal age, and even try to drive back home without asking for assistance from sober ones. Consequently, this approach may lead to severe accidents in which sometime they lose their life. However, adults can forbid them if they try to drink as well as can also drive them home.

In conclusion, teenagers are more likely to be victims of illegal activities and more likely to do drink during night. That is why I also believe this an excellent step has been taken for the safety of youngsters because they may less likely to interact with certain situations whenever an elder is with them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position throughout regarding the curfew for teenagers. You support your opinion with relevant ideas, such as the vulnerability of young people to crime and the prevention of poor decision-making like drinking and dangerous driving. However, some ideas show a tendency to over-generalise or remain slightly under-developed, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher level. For instance, while you mention gangs and human trafficking, the supporting examples are brief and could be extended further. Overall, your main arguments remain clear and directly answer the prompt's question about your opinion on the curfew.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. You successfully divide your ideas into distinct paragraphs, using an introduction, two body paragraphs featuring clear topic sentences, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to connect your points, such as 'One reason is that', 'Another reason is that', and 'In conclusion'. However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical, and referencing or linking between certain sentences could be smoother to achieve a fully seamless flow. Additionally, referencing words like 'this approach' or 'certain situations' are generally clear, but occasionally could be linked more tightly to the preceding clause to elevate the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'exponentially', 'ramifications', 'human trafficking', and 'uncertainty'. There are, however, some word choice and collocation errors that surface, such as 'most prominent victims' instead of most common or primary victims, 'do drink' instead of drink alcohol, and 'on parties' instead of at parties. Spelling and word choice errors do not impede communication, and the vocabulary remains minimally sufficient to convey your thoughts clearly, though greater precision and control over less common vocabulary are needed to reach the next band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination with structures like 'Although the police is there to protect...' and 'whenever they interact with...'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that persist throughout the text. These include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'the police is' (instead of are), article omissions or misuse like 'adult's company' and 'the US', and prepositional inaccuracies such as 'victims of any crime' or 'during night'. Complex sentences are often somewhat faulty, and while these errors rarely impede overall communication, they do restrict the grammatical score due to their frequency.
