Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that teenagers should be subject to a nightime curfew in order to protect them from potentail danger. I agree with this policy to a large extent, although I beleive that it should be applied reasonably rather than excessively.

One major benefits of a curfew is that it can im prove teenagers safety. Young people who stay outside late at night may be exposed to crime, violence or other dangerous situation. By requiring them to return home at a resonable time, parents and authorities can reduce these risk. For example, teenagers who are walking home alone after midnight may be more vulnerable to theft or physical activites. A curfew can therfore give parents greater peace of mind while encouraging young people to develop responsable habits.

Another important adavntage is that a nighttime restriction can discourage teenager from becoming involved in inappropriate activites. Late-night gathering may sometimes involve alcohol, drugs,or other forms of antisocial behaviour. If teenagers know that they are excepted to be at home after a certain hour, they may be less likely to participe in such activity. In addition, having a fixed schedule can encourage them to get enough sleep, which is essential for their health, concentration and academic performance.

However, I do not beleive that curfew should be extremly strict. Teenagers also need some independence to develop decision making skills and learn how to manage their own lives. For instance, an older teenager may need to work late shift, attend an evening educational programme, or trravel home from a family or school event.

In conclusion, I beleive that curfews can be beneficial because they profect teenagers from potenital dangers and reduce the likelihood of antisocial behaviour. Neverthless. they should be flexible and appropriate to a teenager age circumstances and level of responsibility.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the task clearly and presents a well-developed position throughout. The writer's opinion is established immediately in the introduction and maintained consistently until the conclusion. Main ideas, such as enhanced safety and the prevention of antisocial behaviour, are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, including references to working late shifts or attending educational programmes. Although there is a slight tendency to overgeneralise in places, such as assuming all late-night gatherings involve alcohol or drugs, the arguments are logically structured and directly answer the prompt regarding whether curfews are appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the essay. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from safety benefits to antisocial behaviour deterrence, and finally to the counter-argument regarding independence and flexibility. Cohesive devices are used flexibly, including transition phrases like 'One major benefits', 'Another important adavntage', and 'However', which help guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing throughout the text remains clear, though a stray full stop in the final paragraph ('Neverthless. they') momentarily disrupts the flow of cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common items such as 'antisocial behaviour', 'vulnerable', and 'decision making skills'. However, the response contains several noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including 'nightime', 'potentail', 'beleive', 'im prove', 'resonable', 'activites', 'adavntage', 'teenager' (where plural is needed), 'excepted' (intended as expected), 'participe', 'extremly', 'trravel', 'profect', and 'Neverthless'. While these errors do not impede communication and the range is sufficient to allow some flexibility, the frequency of these lexical and spelling slips prevents the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses, alongside simple forms. There are frequent error-free sentences demonstrating a solid overall control of grammar. Minor errors persist, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('One major benefits') and occasional punctuation slips, but overall control remains strong. Punctuation is generally managed well to structure complex thoughts, and verb tenses are handled accurately throughout the piece, allowing the grammar to support clear communication.
