Student answer (Band 6.0)
According to my perspective the curfew should have imposed much earlier in those area because the number of criminals activities happening at the night time are increasing day by day. Teenagers are not mature and strong enough to take care of themselves if a criminal tries to harm or try to influence them by bribing them. I have personally seen so many homeless people who are heavily drugged and are completely out of their senses which makes them extremely aggressive and agitated which eventually creates an urge in their body to break, stab and damage some public properties. Apart from the homeless people, the drug dealers and kidnappers are roaming in the areas freely, looking for children who are out of their homes late night to kidnap them and ask for money to the parents. A real life example is when my father's friends son was kidnapped for showing off his wealth in college and even after giving the ransom money to the kidnappers, they killed him by stabbing him 40 times. Surprisingly we got to know that all the kidnappers were his friends of college and did it for money because the son used to brag about his lifestyle and the amount of gold and cash he has at his home which made his friends greedy enough to commit a crime like murder and ended up being in jail for 10 years. So the curfew imposed is necessary for some specific locations in the United States and should be encouraged by the parents and teenagers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on teenage curfews right from the beginning, supporting it with a mix of general arguments and personal examples. It successfully bridges the gap between the requirements of a mid-band and a higher band by offering well-extended reasoning about safety, crime rates, and vulnerable youth. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or prone to over-generalisation, such as the sweeping claims about homeless individuals or the extended narrative about a single kidnapping incident, which takes up a disproportionate amount of space without fully exploring broader societal perspectives. To reach a higher level, the writer should ensure that arguments are more evenly balanced and that supporting examples directly substantiate the main thesis in a more concise, analytical manner rather than relying heavily on a single anecdotal story.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance maintained throughout the paragraph. However, the progression is hindered by structural limitations, notably the fact that the entire essay consists of a single, massive block of text without proper paragraph breaks. Cohesive devices are used, but referencing is sometimes faulty or mechanical, such as the repetitive use of connectors like 'and' and 'so' to link dense clauses. While the logical flow from the benefits of curfews to specific dangers and finally to a concluding summary is generally understandable, the lack of paragraphing restricts the development of clear logical organisation. To improve, the writer must divide the response into logical paragraphs—separating the introduction, body arguments regarding public safety, the personal example, and the conclusion—and employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'agitated', 'ransom', and 'brag'. There are, however, some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'criminal activities happening at the night time' instead of 'at night', and 'ask for money to the parents' instead of 'demand money from parents'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary choices do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily. To move towards a higher band, the writer needs to increase lexical flexibility and precision, avoiding awkward word combinations and demonstrating a more natural control of less common lexical items, such as using 'extortion' or 'abduction' instead of repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'unless they are accompanied by an adult'. There are, however, some persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, including tense and verb form issues ('the curfew should have imposed' instead of 'should be imposed', 'criminals activities' pluralisation mismatch), missing articles, and preposition errors within grammatical patterns. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. To achieve a higher score, the writer must increase control over complex sentence structures, ensuring accurate subject-verb agreement, proper passive voice constructions, and refined punctuation to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences.
