In some areas of the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, in which teenagers are not allowed to be out of doors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult.

What is your opinion about this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The implementation of nighttime curfew for teenagers is a controversial policy used in various regions of the United States. While proponents argue that these curfews are good for teenagers and maintain public order, opponents believe they infringe upon personal liberties. In my opinion, while curfews are introduced with good intentions to ensure safety, they are an overly restrictive measure that penalizes responsible youth rather than addresssing the root cause.

On one hand, such curfews are good for public safety and youth protection, as this way they will be safe from any substance abuse or other kinds of abuses like raping etc as such things mostly happen latenight when streetlights are off , majority of people sleep, drug addicts become active at that time as night owls, they may harm teenagers in anyways. This age has a peak influence in pronography as well and they find ways to do something against the rules and nighttime is used for such abuse as well.

On the other hand, there are some youngsters who have latenight jobs , someone works in security, sometimes they do extracurricular sports that are often at nighttime , they dont always have some adult who can accompany them. This curfew will overly penalize such teenagers as their hands are tied , they have to earn for their families, may be they are the only bread earner of their house , they can't leave the job and are unable to be accompanied by an adult everyday..

In conclusion, although nighttime curfews are designed with positive intension on safeguardung freedom but they also cause restructions on freedom.

There should be some centres made for young people or nighttie community programs, who are active at night time, so if there is any need of help, they can respond instantly or arrive in case of emergency.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you recognise the safety rationale for curfews but argue that they restrict responsible teenagers, especially those who work or take part in evening activities. This addresses the question and is supported with relevant examples, such as teenagers working in security or earning money for their families. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the safety paragraph relies on broad claims about abuse and drug activity, while the conclusion’s proposed community centres and night-time programmes are introduced without explaining how they would work or directly resolve the curfew issue. To strengthen the response, explain the examples more carefully and make your final recommendation consistent with your view that curfews are overly restrictive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. The signposts “On one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the opposing considerations, and the position is stated in the opening. However, progression within paragraphs is less controlled. The first body paragraph moves rapidly from substance abuse to streetlights, drug users and pornography, with limited links showing how each point supports the argument. The conclusion also shifts from opposing curfews to suggesting centres without a clear transition. Some sentences are overloaded, and punctuation spacing makes boundaries harder to see. Group related points, use clearer references, and connect the recommendation explicitly to the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “curfew,” “public order,” “personal liberties,” and “extracurricular,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. However, the range and control are limited by repeated general wording such as “good,” “abuse,” and “teenagers,” as well as inaccurate or awkward expressions: “latenight,” “pronography,” “bread earner,” and “positive intension on safeguardung freedom.” These errors sometimes make the reader pause to interpret the point. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling and word forms. For example, describe the policy as “restrictive,” refer to “substance misuse” or “sexual exploitation” where appropriate, and use “sole breadwinner” for the family-support example.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex forms, including the contrast in “while curfews are introduced with good intentions … they are an overly restrictive measure” and the conditional idea “if there is any need of help.” Some sentence structures communicate the main points, but errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles and clause construction reduce accuracy. For instance, “The implementation … United States. While” needs a space after the full stop, and the long safety sentence beginning “as this way they will be safe” contains several clauses joined without clear punctuation. “There are some youngsters who have latenight jobs, someone works in security” also shifts awkwardly between plural and singular subjects. Break long sentences into controlled units and check agreement and punctuation.
