IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some areas of the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, in which teenagers are not allowed to be out of doors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult.
What is your opinion about this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Imposing 'curfew' for a certain reason is always acceptable. If we take reports of crime under consideration, more of those are happened after 11pm and most culprits are young people or say teenagers. The crime level is very alarming, and people involved in those cases are mostly individuals under 20 years of age.
To control this, imposing a curfew is a very useful method. Giving proper instructions about the curfew, how long it would be, and what to consider?. Instead of giving panic, the responsible authority will give proper instuructions to public about why and how. It is really important to educate people about the situation and how to respond to it. Besides these, adults or the parents should always checking on their teenagers to make sure that they are safe and at home before the curfew. Accompaning an adult during the curfew is just to make sure that we are not dening their basic rights.
Few years ago, in a town vandalism was reported and police were looking for the culprits. Weeks after they caught few teenagers destructing public properties. They announced curfew for a specific time period and there is a significant decrease in the crime during that period.
From that incident, we learned how these kinds of situations can be handled without much stress. Authorities has to take care of those situations. Night patrolling in those areas and imposing fine would also be a good act to keep those crimes from happening or atleast to keep the numbers low.
To conclude, I think curfew's are a good move to keep a situation under control without causing a big public chaos.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you support curfews as a way to control crime, and you address the role of authorities, parents, and adult supervision. The example of teenagers caught damaging public property also gives your argument relevant support. This meets the task well, and the practical suggestions show some development beyond simply stating an opinion. However, parts of the reasoning rely on broad claims, such as saying that most crimes after 11 p.m. involve young people, without explaining where this information comes from. The town example is also brief: adding details about how the curfew worked and why it reduced vandalism would make the support more convincing and your ideas more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: it introduces your view, gives reasons and an example, and ends with a conclusion. The progression from crime prevention to parental supervision and then to the town incident is generally understandable. However, some links between ideas are abrupt or unclear. For example, “To control this” does not specify exactly what “this” refers to, and “Besides these” is an awkward transition into the point about parents. The sentence beginning “Giving proper instructions” is also incomplete, which interrupts the flow. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each paragraph’s supporting details more explicitly; this would make the organisation feel less list-like and the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “curfew,” “culprits,” “vandalism,” “public properties,” and “night patrolling.” These choices help communicate your main points, and you attempt some more specific expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “crime level,” “giving panic,” “destructing public properties,” and “keep those crimes from happening.” There are also spelling errors, including “instuructions,” “Accompaning,” and “atleast,” which reduce the overall control of vocabulary. Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling carefully. A broader, more precise range would help you express the argument without relying on repeated general terms such as “good” and “situation.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional phrasing (“If we take reports of crime under consideration”) and a relative clause (“in which teenagers are not allowed…”). The main meaning is usually understandable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “more of those are happened” should use a correct active or passive form, while “parents should always checking” needs a base verb after “should.” “Authorities has to take care” also has a subject–verb agreement error. The fragment “Giving proper instructions…” and the question mark in “what to consider?” further affect accuracy. Practise complete sentences and check verb patterns and agreement, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
