Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. Last week I had meeting at your Taj Hotel with all my employees. I am glad to share that our all participants were really liked the facilities at hotel. Main hall is air conditioned which was perfect to concentrate on presentations and a warm welcome by your staff. I really appreciate it.
Unfortunately, all of my candidates were disappointed by quality of food and service. Moreover, we placed an order for lunch at 1pm but it was late also food was not even warm properly which makes us unhappy. Furthermore, Mexican dish tastes weird and not up to mark.
It will be really appreciated if you would focus on your recipes of all the food items and provide trainings to your chefs along with time management and improve your service of the food because this kind of disappointment also affect your business negatively.
yours faithfully,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the positive aspects of the hotel (facilities and staff), explain the issues with the food (lateness, temperature, and quality), and provide suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could provide a specific example of what 'weird' means regarding the Mexican dish to make your complaint more persuasive and professional.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor grammatical errors that affect the smoothness of the sentences. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this kind of disappointment') clearly connects back to the preceding points to enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'disappointed', 'facilities', and 'time management'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'not up to mark' (should be 'not up to the mark') and 'warm properly' (should be 'properly warmed'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated adjectives and formal business expressions would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I had meeting' (missing article 'a'), 'our all participants were really liked' (incorrect passive/active voice), and 'this kind of disappointment also affect' (subject-verb agreement error: 'affects'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage, and try to incorporate more complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
