Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter regarding to the office meeting held at your hotel for whole day where guests were so impressed with the hotel ambiance but not satisfied with the food served in the noon.
To begin with, there were many things praised by participants such as, soothing lights, well designed stage in middle of hall and plenty of sitting area. Additionally, the music system during the entire event was really great.
However, the food served in the starting of meeting was so delicious as well as the dinner but during the lunch time the chicken was raw and their was no cold water available for the guests due to which their feedback was not good.
Therefore, I would recommend it if you could hire a professional cooks for such big events where more than fifty people will be present. Also, testing a food before serving to the guests can save the hotel reputation from negative feedbacks.
I hope you will consider my suggestions and improve the future events experience.
Kind regards,
Sukhman

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the lunch service, and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the lunch issue is more precise; for instance, you mentioned the food served at the 'starting of the meeting' was delicious, which contradicts the prompt's focus on the lunch feedback. Maintaining consistency in your narrative will strengthen your response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use basic cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Additionally', 'However', and 'Therefore' to guide the reader through your points. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the connection between sentences is more fluid. For example, the transition between the positive feedback and the negative lunch experience could be more nuanced to better reflect the shift in tone.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'ambiance', 'soothing', and 'reputation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'served in the noon' (should be 'at noon') and 'testing a food' (should be 'tasting the food'). Additionally, 'starting of meeting' is slightly unnatural. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations and articles to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors, including article usage ('the lunch time', 'a professional cooks'), subject-verb agreement ('their was no cold water'), and prepositional errors ('regarding to'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic errors like pluralization and article consistency, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater grammatical control.
