Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to give some feedback on the hotel services as I have organized an all-day meeting at your hotel last Monday. My team really liked the modern visual and audio set up in the meeting room. The staff was very professional and always tried to assist with any issues.
However, the participants showed dissatisfaction with the food served during the lunch. Firstly, as the food had only few options available, the variety was not presented in the food. Apart from that, some of the dishes were too cold and freshness was also missing from the food.
This kind of service does not reflect the reputation of your hotel. I highly recommend you to offer more variety in the food menu and the staff should make regular check on the food temperature and quality so that customers can have better quality food service. I hope the food service can be improved with the suggested changes.
Thank you for managing our event. I look forward to hosting more meeting at your hotel.
Yours faithfully,
Palvinder Singh

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the lunch service, and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, demonstrating a good understanding of the expected format for a formal business letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Firstly', and 'Apart from that' to link your sentences and paragraphs. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'modern visual and audio set up' and 'does not reflect the reputation' are used effectively. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the variety was not presented in the food' and 'freshness was also missing from the food', which sound slightly unnatural. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and using more precise collocations would help elevate your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'as I have organized' (should be 'as I organized' or 'as I had organized') and 'make regular check' (should be 'make regular checks'). Additionally, there is a missing space after the comma in 'options available, the variety'. Despite these occasional slips, your control of grammar is generally good and does not impede communication.
