Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing regarding the all-day meeting which was organized in your hotel last Sunday by our company.

firstly, the ambiance of hotel was aesthetic. Everyone liked the decoration for the day which was according to the event. Moreover the sitting arrangements where perfect with all the basic things provided on seats .

Besides this, The food served during the lunch was not up to the standards of the hotel. As the food was served little late and few vegetables were half cooked. Every one complained about the food in the after party dinner.

To come up with the solution, your hotel should check the quality of food as well as have the conversation with the servers and chefs regarding the quality. Moreover, for the goodwill of the restaurant this should not be neglected.

I hope their won't be any problem in the upcoming events arranged in you hotel's conference hall.

Yours faithfully,

Narveer Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the lunch service, and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could have elaborated on the specific impact the poor lunch had on the meeting's schedule or the participants' overall experience. However, the response is fully relevant and meets the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'firstly', 'moreover', and 'besides this' to connect your ideas. While the flow is generally logical, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. For example, the transition between the positive aspects and the complaint could be more fluid. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the message is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'ambiance', 'aesthetic', and 'goodwill'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'sitting arrangements' (should be 'seating arrangements') and 'after party dinner' (which is slightly confusing in this context). Additionally, there are some minor spelling and punctuation errors, such as 'their' instead of 'there'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations and proofreading for small slips will help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the ambiance of hotel' (missing an article), 'sitting arrangements where perfect' (incorrect verb 'where' instead of 'were'), and 'have the conversation' (unnecessary article). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will also help you achieve a higher band.
