Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
My name is Smit Surti and I arranged a corporate meeting at your well-known hotel called The Taj, on Septemper 1st 2026. I am writing to express my disssatisfiction reagrding the food served after the meeting.
Firstly, the hotel provided a nicely decorated setting for the meeting and the trained staff was exceptional with their servicies and by following the protocals set by me.
However, the next day I recieved the reviews from my staff and other participants, I found out that not only the starter and main course serverd undercooked but also they had unpleasent smell. This has diminished my reputation completely.
To solve this matter, I would request the manger to foster rules for your kitchen staff in order to maintain the quality standers of food. Additionly, I would appreciate it if you could provide a discount for my future events.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter and I look forward for your response.
Sincerely,
Smit Surti

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: it mentions the positive aspects of the hotel, explains the issues with the food, and suggests improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the suggestion for the manager to 'foster rules' is vague and could be more specific to demonstrate a better grasp of the task requirements. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is fully informed of the situation and the desired outcome.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', and 'Additionally' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better connect the problem to the proposed solution. Overall, the organisation is sufficient for the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their dissatisfaction clearly. There are several spelling errors, such as 'disssatisfiction', 'reagrding', 'servicies', 'protocals', 'recieved', 'serverd', 'unpleasent', 'manger', 'standers', and 'Additionly'. These errors are frequent and occasionally distracting, though they do not impede the overall meaning. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on accurate spelling and incorporating more precise, topic-specific collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the trained staff was exceptional' (subject-verb agreement), 'I found out that not only the starter and main course serverd undercooked' (missing verb 'were'), and 'I look forward for your response' (incorrect preposition; should be 'to'). Punctuation is mostly functional, but the sentence structure in the third paragraph is slightly awkward. The errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the message.
