Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing regarding a hotel.I missed the food quality at your hotel.I believe that the menu of food should be addressed.

At the outset, the guests liked the location of hotel and the ambience of that place. The living room was very airy and air conditioned. The bedroom was very spacious. Moreover, the management was very cooperative and friendly. They enjoyed the stay at your hotel.

However, the quality of food served in lunch and breakfast was not a good. The aroma of food was pleasing to nostrils but the quality of food was bare minimum. They didn't like the cold and spice food and taste was very odd. I was very disappointed at that stage.I called the manager but he didn't admit the mistake of his master chef.

You should manage the cuisine in a professional manner. In addition, manager should introduce the feedback form for guests. So everyone can give their own opinion regarding the improvement of your cuisine. Manager should admit the mistake in front of guests.

Yours Faithfully,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: the positive aspects of the hotel, the issues with the food, and suggestions for improvement. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the mention of a 'bedroom' and 'living room' is slightly off-topic, as the prompt specifies an 'all-day meeting' in a hotel, implying a conference or business setting rather than an overnight stay. The tone is also occasionally aggressive, such as the comment about the manager not admitting mistakes, which is not typical for a formal letter of complaint. To improve, ensure your ideas are strictly relevant to the context provided in the instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'At the outset', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly unnatural. The referencing is occasionally unclear; for example, in the first paragraph, you mention 'a hotel' without context, and the shift between discussing the meeting participants and your personal disappointment is abrupt. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that your pronouns clearly refer back to the intended subjects will help achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, but there are several instances of awkward collocation and word choice. Phrases like 'bare minimum' and 'pleasing to nostrils' sound unnatural in a formal business letter. Additionally, there are minor errors such as 'not a good' (should be 'not good') and 'spice food' (should be 'spicy food'). To improve, focus on using more precise adjectives and standard business collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more formal expressions for expressing dissatisfaction would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

Your writing shows a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the location of hotel'), incorrect verb forms, and punctuation issues, such as missing spaces after commas ('However, the'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are noticeable throughout the text. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Proofreading your work for basic punctuation and spacing errors would significantly enhance the clarity and professionalism of your writing.
