Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Dhruvish Panchal and I am writing this to express my gratitude on behalf of my company.

Recently, I booked a conference hall at your hotel for an important meeting included about 200 employees and a few business partners. All the participants appreciated overwhelming service provided by the staff and the mouthwatering refreshments served at the commencement of the event.

However, there was a disappointment in the lunch as I paid for premium plan and received basic one. Even worst was the food, some of the garlic naans were undercooked and some of are burned which forced participants to have rice only. Since curries were tasteless and cold, employees did not consume it and that is the reason of dumping a whole lot of food.

I would recommend you change heating system for the food and replacing the chef with a experience one.

I have attached photographs for your reference and I am looking forward to a response from your side.

Kind regards,

Dhruvish Panchal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly stated what was liked (the service and refreshments), explained the issues with the lunch (undercooked/burnt food, poor quality), and provided suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is slightly more balanced; for instance, the explanation of the food quality is quite detailed, while the suggestions for improvement could be expanded with a bit more professional detail to fully flesh out the 'how' and 'why' of your recommendations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'Since', which help link your ideas. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases further and ensure that the transition between the positive feedback and the complaint is smoother. Some sentences, such as 'Even worst was the food', feel a bit abrupt. Using more sophisticated transitions would enhance the flow and make the progression of your argument feel more natural and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'commencement', 'gratitude', and 'premium plan'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation that slightly hinder precision. For example, 'included about 200 employees' should be 'including', and 'replacing the chef with a experience one' should be 'an experienced one'. Additionally, 'dumping a whole lot of food' is slightly informal for this context. Focusing on accurate word forms and choosing slightly more formal alternatives for phrasal verbs or colloquial expressions will help you move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'some of are burned' (should be 'some of them were burned') and 'change heating system' (missing article 'the'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on proofreading for basic articles, verb tenses, and sentence construction will significantly improve your accuracy.
