IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently organised an all-day meeting for your company, which took place in a local hotel. In their feedback, participants at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch.
Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to provide my feedback regarding the meeting that was organized in your hotel by our firm.
The meeting was held on July 29th, under the name ABC Corporation. I do appreciate how you and the staff worked hard to make it successful. From the customer service to the arrangement, everything was outstanding. Because of the latest devices provided by the hotel, managers were easily able to demonstrate the project to the participants.
My only concern is with the food. Chicken was slightly undercooked and salad was not fresh. Some of the attendees even complain about the lunch. Therefore, I would recommend that either the chef or you should personally ensure about the meal. As food is an important part of any celebration or meeting and if it's not good it might leave a negative impression.
I hope my suggestions will be taken into consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Vaishali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel (customer service, equipment), explained the issues with the lunch (undercooked chicken, lack of freshness), and provided a constructive suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of the poor food to show more development of ideas, as the current explanation is quite brief. However, the response is fully relevant and covers all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'Because of', which help link your ideas. However, the transition between the positive feedback and the complaint could be smoother. To improve, ensure that your paragraphing remains consistent and try to use a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'outstanding', 'demonstrate', and 'consideration'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for a formal business letter. There are a few minor issues with word choice, such as 'ensure about the meal', which should be 'ensure the quality of the meal'. While you communicate your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise or sophisticated vocabulary—such as 'substandard' instead of 'not good'—would help demonstrate a wider range and elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your grammar is generally accurate. Most of your sentences are easy to understand, and errors are infrequent. For example, 'Some of the attendees even complain' should be in the past tense ('complained') to match the context of the event. Additionally, 'ensure about the meal' is grammatically awkward. Despite these minor slips, your control over punctuation and sentence structure is good, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would further strengthen this score.
