Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to provide my remarks on the recent event that we organised in your hotel for introducing our new product in the market. The event which was held on last week, primarily comprised of our main guests from local city, our shareholders, our management and executive staff and some future clients as well.

Every person was very happy with the organisation of event especially about the staff's services. All the staff including receptionist, catering staff, music staff and everyone else. They were all very professional about their work.

However, there is one section in which your hotel was lacking perfectionism and that is the quality of your food. Everyone says it was very spicy for them. I think your head chef used various kinds of spicy ingredients in all dishes that it was very difficult for everyone to digest.

Therefore, in future, I suggest you to ask your client about their food preferences in advance prior to make any food. It would be very useful for you to ask your clients about their choices about dishes and spice level in these.

I hope you'll consider my feedback important and try to improve this flaw in your reputation of perfect hotel. Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state what the participants liked (staff services), explain the issue with the food (excessive spice), and provide a constructive suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are more standard for formal correspondence, as 'Dear Sir' is slightly less conventional than 'Dear Sir or Madam' when the gender is unknown, and the closing could be more professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Therefore', to link your points. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is more precise. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would help the text feel more natural and fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'primarily comprised of' and 'professional about their work' are clear and communicate your meaning effectively. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'lacking perfectionism' and 'prior to make any food'. These do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise collocation. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms for common words would help elevate your writing to a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully convey your message, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'held on last week' (should be 'held last week') and 'prior to make any food' (should be 'prior to making any food'). Additionally, there are some minor punctuation and article usage issues. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not significantly impede communication. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of gerunds after prepositions will help improve your accuracy.
