Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to provide feedback regarding all day meeting that our company recently held at your hotel.

First of all i would like to mention that participants were impressed with several aspects of your hotel. They particularly appreciated the comfortable meeting facilities, the professional and friendly attitude of the staff and the clean and pleasant environment. Most attendes commented positively on the convenient location of the hotel.

Apart from that, there are some disappointment regarding the food that was served during the meeting. The main concern was the limited variety of food options available. Some people felt that the menu did not cater different dietary preferences such as, vegetarian and light food choices. A few of them also mentioned that the food was served at deal temperature, that effected their overall dining experience.

I would like to suggest a few improvements that will be helpful for your future events. It would be beneficial to offer wide range of dishes and collect information about the guests dietary requirements before events. Moreover, ensuring the food is freshly prepared and served on time would greatly improve customer satisfaction.

we appreciate the customer service provided by your hotel and hope that the suggestions help to maintain high standards your guests expects. we would be happy to consider your hotel for future events.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the food, and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a company meeting. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor details, such as the specific nature of the 'deal temperature' (likely a typo for 'tepid' or 'lukewarm'), are articulated with greater precision to fully convey your meaning to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which makes the structure easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Apart from that', and 'Moreover' to link your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the transitions further and ensure that referencing is always precise. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'cater different dietary preferences' and 'maintain high standards' are effective. There are some minor errors, such as 'deal temperature' (likely intended to be 'tepid' or 'inadequate') and 'effected' (should be 'affected'). While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful word choice. Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring accurate usage of verbs will help you move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are clear, though there are occasional grammatical slips, such as 'all day meeting' (missing an article: 'an all-day meeting'), 'attendes' (spelling error), and 'guests dietary requirements' (missing apostrophe: 'guests' dietary requirements'). Additionally, the sentence 'the food was served at deal temperature, that effected their overall dining experience' contains a minor punctuation and word choice error. Despite these, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not significantly disrupt the flow of the letter.
