IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently organised an all-day meeting for your company, which took place in a local hotel. In their feedback, participants at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch.
Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to inform you that last Sunday I conducted a business meeting in your hotel, and I am providing feedback on behalf of my team members.
Firstly, last Sunday around 12:00 PM, my team visited your hotel, and they were very happy with the services your staff provided. However, your staff welcomed them warmly and provided some complimentary drinks that impressed them a lot. Apart from that, the hotel is very organised and clean compared to other local restaurants. Additionally, the room we selected they loved the view from the window, such as the swimming pool and beautiful flowers.
Furthermore, they are unhappy about the food services; according to them, the food was so spicy due to a lot of spices that they were unable to recognise the taste of the cuisine. This feedback was also very strange for me because I am a regular customer at your hotel, and every time I love the food that I ordered.
I hope you understand my concern and take the necessary steps to improve this problem so that next time no one will provide this feedback again. Maybe talk to your staff members about this concern so that they can work on this issue.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Sargundeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, such as the staff service and the view, explained the issue with the overly spicy food, and provided a constructive suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the food issue is more precise; for instance, you could specify if the lunch was a buffet or a set menu, which would add more depth to your development of ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', 'Apart from that', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. While the structure is sound, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and avoiding repetitive sentence starters. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'complimentary drinks', 'regular customer', and 'necessary steps' are used effectively. However, there are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'conducted a business meeting' (usually 'held' or 'hosted') and 'improve this problem' (usually 'resolve' or 'address'). Expanding your range of synonyms and focusing on more precise collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the room we selected they loved the view' (which is a run-on/comma splice issue) and 'no one will provide this feedback again' (which is slightly unnatural). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on sentence boundary punctuation and ensuring subject-verb agreement remains consistent throughout more complex sentences.
