You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Manager,

I am writing to give feedback about your hotel for the full-day event that was organised on last Saturday.

The most attractive part of the event was the warm welcome of our guests. The hotel staff was friendly as well as professional which is rare to find these days. Adding to it, the banquet hall was very spacious and the audio-visual devices were also functioning very well, which helped to complete the meeting successfully.

However, I had some complaints regarding food served for lunch to the participants. Some people complained about food being cold while others found it to be stale and re-heated.

I would highly recommend you to look into the matter and reach out to your catering team and get back to me with the changes you would be making to correct this problem as we have an upcoming event next week at your hotel. Furthermore, if needed I would recommend you to change the team for our next event as food plays a major role in our guests mood.

Thank you

Krupa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the specific issues regarding the lunch, and provided a constructive suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail in your suggestions, such as proposing a specific meeting with the catering manager or requesting a menu review, which would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the task, which makes the information easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices like 'However,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Adding to it' to transition between ideas. To improve, you could vary your linking words further and ensure that the progression between sentences is even smoother. For instance, the transition between the praise for the hotel and the complaint about the food could be slightly more nuanced to reflect the shift in tone.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'professional,' 'spacious,' and 'functioning very well' are accurate and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor issues with collocation, such as 'give feedback about' (usually 'provide feedback on') and 'guests mood' (missing an apostrophe). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise or sophisticated vocabulary, such as 'unsatisfactory' instead of 'unhappy' or 'rectify' instead of 'correct'. Overall, your vocabulary is adequate and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are some minor errors, such as 'organised on last Saturday' (the 'on' is unnecessary) and 'I would highly recommend you to look into' (a more natural structure would be 'I strongly recommend that you look into'). Punctuation is generally good, though there is a missing apostrophe in 'guests mood'. These errors are infrequent and do not cause any confusion for the reader, indicating a good level of control.
