Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing you on behalf of my company about the problem I did face as an organiser. It was an all-day meeting organised here in your hotel. Overall the ambiance was attractive and cool, but food was a big disappointment.

This weekend, I was asked to organize a full-day meeting from my company. I chose yours hotel as I am yours regular customer. Overall meeting went fine. As the meeting finished, the invited ones were asked to pen down their thoughts regarding meeting arrangement and food. As per their remarks, the ambiance and arrangements were really good. Service was humble as well as polite. Meeting was held poolside, so they loved the freshness. But to my disappointment, a number of complains were related to the served food.

According to invited ones, first of all the dining plates were not hot. Among the variety of continental dishes, more were slate in taste. 19B soup was served a bit cold with less quantity of prawns. Chicken curry was so thick and a bit spicy. Egg fried rice was in less quantity.

I am writing to you pointing out all the mentioned drawbacks in the served food, with a hope that you would take some serious step to compensate the disaster during meeting. As per my opinion, you must review the expertise of your chefs. Moreover, you should think to send your cooking staff to some other re-known hotels to get the required expertise.

Looking forward yours positive response.

Kind Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly state what was liked (ambiance, service, poolside setting), explain the dissatisfaction with the food (cold plates, poor quality, specific dish issues), and provide suggestions for improvement (reviewing chef expertise, staff training). The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter. However, the development of ideas is slightly repetitive, particularly in the second and third paragraphs where you restate the purpose of the letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces new information rather than echoing previous points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the positive feedback from the complaints and suggestions. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'According to', to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'Overall' and 'As per'. The referencing is generally clear, though some phrasing, such as 'invited ones', is slightly unnatural and impacts the flow of the text. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'ambiance', 'continental dishes', and 'drawbacks'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors that hinder precision, such as 'slate in taste' (likely meaning bland), '19B soup' (which is unclear), and 're-known' (renowned). Additionally, phrases like 'pen down their thoughts' and 'compensate the disaster' are slightly unnatural in a formal business context. While the meaning is generally clear, these inaccuracies prevent the vocabulary from being considered flexible or sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I am writing you on behalf' (should be 'writing to you'), 'I chose yours hotel' (should be 'your'), 'Overall meeting went fine' (missing article), and 'Looking forward yours positive response' (should be 'to your'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent. To improve, focus on the correct use of articles, possessive pronouns, and prepositional phrases, as these are the most common areas where your accuracy currently falters.
