IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently organised an all-day meeting for your company, which took place in a local hotel. In their feedback, participants at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch.
Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Jacob,
The purpose of my writing today is to inform you about the experience we had in your hotel last week and also would like to share the feedback I have received from my team.
To start with, most of the team members appreciated the cooperation by your staff members and the cleanliness they observed in rest rooms. Moreover, the waiting area was very well decorated.
I would also mention that we were extremely unhappy about the food option we got served. Firstly, there were limited vegetarian options and preference was already conveyed at the time of booking. Secondly, we got served with frozen dishes rather than fresh food.
To improve this, I have several recommendations for your hotel. For similar instances, please add vegetarian live counter options for quick foods such as, Dosa, Idli etc. Also, kindly improvise your buffet menu with more vegetarian options.
I am looking forward to seeing how my suggestion translate into prompt actions from your side. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. Furthermore, an open line of communication, from your side, in this case would greatly help out.
Your Sincerely,
Karan Virmani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel (staff and cleanliness), explained the dissatisfaction regarding the food (lack of vegetarian options and poor quality), and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening salutation matches the prompt's instruction; you used 'Dear Jacob' instead of the required 'Dear Sir or Madam', which is a minor lapse in following instructions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You used cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'Moreover', and 'Firstly' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother, and some phrasing, such as 'I would also mention that', is slightly repetitive. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and the use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'cooperation', 'cleanliness', and 'prompt actions'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'improvise your buffet menu' (where 'improve' or 'expand' would be more accurate) and 'live counter options' (which is slightly informal). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations would help elevate the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'would also like to share' (missing the subject 'I') and 'how my suggestion translate' (subject-verb agreement error: 'suggestions translate' or 'suggestion translates'). Additionally, 'Your Sincerely' is an incorrect closing; it should be 'Yours sincerely'. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring the correct usage of formal letter conventions.
