Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Jacob,

The purpose of my writing today is to inform you about the experience we had in your hotel last week and I would also like to share the feedback I have received from my team.

To start with, most of the team members appreciated the cooperation by your staff members and the cleanliness they observed in the restrooms. Moreover, the waiting area was very well decorated.

I would also mention that we were extremely unhappy about the food option we got served. Firstly, there were limited vegetarian options and our preference was already conveyed at the time of booking. Secondly, we got served with frozen dishes rather than fresh food.

To improve this, I have several recommendations for your hotel. For similar instances, please add vegetarian live counter options for quick foods such as Dosa, Idli, etc. Also, kindly improvise your buffet menu with more vegetarian options.

I am looking forward to seeing how my suggestions translate into prompt actions from your side. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. Furthermore, an open line of communication, from your side, in this case would greatly help out.

Your Sincerely,

Karan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the food, and provided actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a corporate meeting. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening salutation matches the prompt instructions; you used 'Dear Jacob' instead of the required 'Dear Sir or Madam', which is a minor lapse in following specific task constraints.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'Moreover', 'Firstly', and 'Secondly' to link your points effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. While the flow is generally good, the transition between the final paragraph and the closing could be slightly smoother to avoid a repetitive structure. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent and professional manner.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'prompt actions', 'conveyed at the time of booking', and 'open line of communication' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'improvise your buffet menu' (where 'improve' or 'expand' would be more natural) and 'live counter options' (which is slightly informal). However, these do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and ensure that word choices are precise in a formal business context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your grammar is generally accurate. Most sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. There are a few minor slips, such as 'the food option we got served' (passive voice 'were served' would be more formal) and 'Your Sincerely' (should be 'Yours sincerely'). These are minor errors that do not affect the clarity of your message. You have good control over punctuation and sentence construction, which makes the letter easy to read and professional in tone.
