Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing regarding the all-day meeting that our company recently held at your hotel. Overall, the event was successful, and I would like to share a feedback from the participants.

First of all, I would like to thank you staff for their excellent service and hospitality. Everyone was impressed by the hotel's modern conference facilities, comfortable meeting room, and professional atmosphere. The was well organized, and the staff were very friendly, helpful, and attentive throughout the day.

However, many participants were disappointed with the lunch that was provided. The menu offered very few choices, especially for those with dietary preferences such a vegetarian or gluten-free diets. In addition, the food was served lukewarm, and some guests felt that the quality and taste did not match the high standards of the hotel.

I would like to suggest that you improve the lunch service by offering a wider variety of dished, including healthier and vegetarian options. It would also be helpful to ensure that the food is served fresh and hot. I believe these changes would greatly improve the overall experience of future guests attending business events at your hotel.

Thank you for considering this feedback. I hope it will be useful, and I look forward to using your hotel again for future company meetings.

Yours faithfully,

Brian Adamson

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the specific issues regarding the lunch service (lack of dietary options and temperature), and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a business meeting feedback letter. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task in a professional manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'However', and 'In addition' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The transition between the positive feedback and the constructive criticism is handled smoothly, maintaining a professional and polite tone throughout the correspondence.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'dietary preferences', 'professional atmosphere', and 'attentive throughout the day' demonstrate a good command of language. There is a minor error in 'share a feedback' (feedback is uncountable) and 'dished' (a typo for 'dishes'), but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is appropriate for a formal business context, and you have avoided repetitive phrasing, showing a good level of lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response shows a good control of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'I believe these changes would greatly improve the overall experience of future guests attending business events at your hotel.' There are a few minor slips, such as 'The was well organized' (missing subject) and 'such a vegetarian' (should be 'such as'), but these are rare and do not affect the clarity of your writing. The majority of your sentences are error-free, demonstrating a high level of accuracy.
