Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this to give you the feedback on your hotel, where we recently organized our meeting.
The meeting took place on last Saturday, it was an all day meeting from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. The participants really liked the facilities provided by the hotel. Conference room was well lit, washrooms were really cleaned, and staff was very kind and supportive. Many attendees also commented positively on ample parking space.
However, the lunch provided during the meeting did not meet our expectations. Many participants complaint that the food was served cold, and the variety of dishes was quite limited. In particular, there were very few vegetarian and healthy options available. As our group included people with different dietary preferences, some attendees were unable to find a suitable meal.
To improve the services for future, I would suggest offering a wide range of dishes including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free options. It would also be helpful to ensure that the food is served at the correct temperature. Finally, asking about dietary requirements in advance could avoid these complaints.
I hope you will take these suggestions seriously, as we had a great experience with your hotel and would like to use your services again in the future.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Pell

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the positive aspects of the hotel, explain the issues with the lunch service, and provide constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, demonstrating a clear understanding of the scenario provided. No parts of the task were omitted, and the response maintains a consistent focus throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the task. The use of cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In particular', and 'Finally' helps to guide the reader through the text effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the positive feedback to the specific complaints and concluding with actionable suggestions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter, making the document easy to follow and professional in appearance.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context, such as 'dietary preferences', 'supportive', and 'expectations'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and fits the context well, there are minor areas where more sophisticated collocations could be used to elevate the writing. For instance, 'washrooms were really cleaned' could be improved to 'immaculately maintained'. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally without any significant errors in word choice or spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as 'The meeting took place on last Saturday' (the 'on' is unnecessary) and 'Many participants complaint' (should be 'complained'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is solid, contributing to the overall clarity and professional tone of the letter.
