Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you about the successful meeting that took place at Hotel Hyatt Regency. The reviews were mix as the participants were supposed to leave their feedback in the glass jar.

The whole event was organized perfectly. The decorum of the hall was so spacious that no one felt crowed even though there were 500 people. The sound system of the mic was great without any power cut and the parking was so convenient for every participant entering the hotel. Also, the servers were so friendly and managed the entire event so seamlessly.

The only drawback we received constantly was that the food was not good. The mangers were so disappointed including the participants that no one enjoyed having the lunch. The taste quality was not up to the standard, also the container was so cold. Unfortunately, dishes mentioned in the menu those were not served.

I highly request the manager to check the quality, taste and warmth of the food before presenting to the participant or the staff members. As it is very shameful and insulting for us to serve stale food to our guests.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours Faithfully,

Ridhima

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the lunch, and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint letter, although the use of the word 'shameful' in the final paragraph is slightly too aggressive for a professional business context. To improve, ensure that your tone remains consistently objective and professional throughout, even when expressing dissatisfaction. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Also' and 'The only drawback', to transition between ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. For instance, the transition between the positive aspects of the hotel and the negative feedback about the food is a bit abrupt. Using more sophisticated cohesive devices would help the reader follow your argument more easily and improve the overall structure of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'seamlessly', 'drawback', and 'consideration'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'decorum of the hall was so spacious' (decorum refers to behavior, not physical space) and 'container was so cold' (referring to the food temperature). Additionally, 'reviews were mix' should be 'mixed'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise vocabulary and ensuring that words are used in their correct context. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and professional collocations will also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The mangers were so disappointed' (likely meant 'managers') and 'dishes mentioned in the menu those were not served' (a redundant 'those'). Punctuation is generally clear, but there are minor slips in sentence construction that occasionally affect the flow. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant pronouns. Proofreading for small errors like 'crowed' instead of 'crowded' will help you achieve a higher level of accuracy in your writing.
