Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to you to express my dissatisfaction about my recent experience at your hotel when i visited there for a company meeting. Before start complaining i want you to know that all the co-workers loved the ambience of the hotel, the decor is impressive and the styles matches modernity.
I want you to know that the food service was pretty bad during our stay, the meals provided were not fully cooked. The menu is not quite good as in appetizers it provides only two things which is there during the meeting and also did not mentions which thing is vegetarian or not.
According to me, to improve situations like this you should make the menu more versatile with adding more options of salads, veggies and appetizers. Also, the menu should reflect which food item is vegan, vegetarian, non vegetarian and dairy.I hope this feedback is useful for you.
Yours sincerely,
Mamta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state what was liked (ambience and decor), explain the issues with the food (undercooked, limited menu, lack of dietary labeling), and provide constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of the poor food service on the meeting itself, which would help to further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition 'Before start complaining' is grammatically awkward and lacks the fluidity expected at higher bands. Using a wider range of linking words and phrases, such as 'Furthermore,' 'Consequently,' or 'In light of this,' would improve the flow between sentences and paragraphs, making the text feel more cohesive and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'ambience,' 'versatile,' and 'modernity' effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'the styles matches modernity' (should be 'style matches the modern aesthetic') and 'the menu is not quite good' (which is overly simplistic). Additionally, there are minor errors in word form, such as 'with adding' instead of 'by adding.' To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary choices are consistently natural and appropriate for a formal business context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'when i visited' (capitalization error), 'Before start complaining' (missing gerund/subject), and 'did not mentions' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices and missing spaces after periods. To improve, you should focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with accurate punctuation and verb forms.
