Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

This letter is regarding the recent event that took place in the banquet hall of Hilton Toronto.

Our university recently organized a science exhibition which was attended by professors and students of various universities from all across Canada. All the attendees praised how thoughtfully the hall was decorated keeping in mind the science theme. Moreover, everyone loved the caring and helpful nature of the staff.

The only complaint that was received in the feedback was how cold and stale the lunch was. Attendees accepted some good quality standards from a place like yours but were disappointed how food came out to be. Also, not a lot of vegetarian and vegan dishes were served for our non meat eating attendees.

I believe that your kitchen should make fresh food and serve them hot while using quality ingredients and should also include various vegetarian and vegan dishes into their serving menu.

Overall, please consider the above mentioned request and appreciate the positive feedback as we look forward to hosting more events with your hotel.

Thank you

Yours faithfully,

Aditya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel (decor and staff), explained the issues with the lunch (temperature and lack of dietary options), and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the task. You have maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the opening paragraph. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the positive feedback and the complaint is slightly more nuanced to reflect a professional business tone.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You have used some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'Also', to link your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs. For example, instead of starting a sentence with 'Also', you could use 'Furthermore, there was a noticeable lack of...'. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'thoughtfully decorated' and 'quality standards' are used effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'how food came out to be' and 'include various... dishes into their serving menu', which sound slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on more precise collocations. For instance, instead of 'how food came out to be', you could use 'the quality of the food was disappointing'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms for common words will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good control of grammar, with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free and easy to understand. There are a few minor slips, such as 'Attendees accepted some good quality standards' (expected is more appropriate here) and 'serve them hot' (referring to 'food', which is uncountable, so 'it' should be used). Punctuation is generally accurate, though ensure consistency in formal letter formatting. Your ability to construct complex sentences is evident, but increasing the variety of these structures would further enhance your writing. Overall, your grammar is strong enough that it does not impede communication.
