Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction to the food service that you provided in our meeting that help last Monday in your hotel.

I booked the hotel for our company’s meeting and had a great experience, the staff was respectful as well as helpful. My teammates liked the organization and reservation made by the staff, each and every thing was available to be used in meeting.

But each and every person showed their disappointment regarding the lunch that was been served as the steaks were hard to chew and soup was not hot enough thought there was a good variety of bread present but the main course dishes were not that tasty. I believe if you replace or hire a good chef can improve your food whereas, try to use freak meat which can also help to improve the taste of the food.

I hope you would consider it and take reasonable precautions to avoid mistakes. I would definitely recommend the hotel to my clients as well and I am also willing to come back for another meeting in you hotel.

Sincerely

Annu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: you mentioned the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues with the food, and provided suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. However, some ideas could be developed further. For instance, the suggestions for improvement are a bit brief. To reach a higher band, you could elaborate on how the hotel could implement these changes, such as requesting a feedback survey or a menu review. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices like 'but', 'as well as', and 'therefore' (implied) to connect your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For example, the transition between the positive feedback and the complaint could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'each and every'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying your message. You use some relevant terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'reservation', and 'precautions'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'freak meat' (likely a typo for 'fresh meat') and 'help' instead of 'held' in the first sentence. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring correct spelling of key terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'dissatisfaction to the food' (should be 'with'), 'that help last Monday' (should be 'that was held'), and 'lunch that was been served' (should be 'that was served'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues, such as missing commas in complex sentences. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your points. Increasing your control over verb tenses and prepositions will help improve your score.
