You recently organised an all-day meeting for your company, which took place in a local hotel. In their feedback, participants at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch.
Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to provide the feedback regarding my recent visit to your hotel. I organized an all-day meeting event for my office yesterday.
Participants were impressed by the reception they received. Not only were they greeted well by the hotel staff members but also they applauded the service they received during the event. Additionally, they were also impressed by the main hall decoration.
Ever since I have been organizing events in your hotel, I have never received a negative feedback until this one. Some people were unhappy about the variety of food available, especially in the deserts sections. Moreover, a number of people also pointed out that some of the main course dishes were cold when served.
I would like to suggest that you should take strict measures to fix these issues. Before organizing an event, asking the client about how types of deserts they need can fix this problem. Furthermore, you can also train the staff for checking the freshness and temperature of food before serving.
Hoping for a prompt action.
Yours faithfully,
Achin Pal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the specific issues regarding the food (variety and temperature), and provided actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands the situation clearly. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail on the impact of these issues on the event, but overall, the task is fully satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the letter. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the positive feedback to the complaint and finally to the suggestions. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure supports the flow of information well.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context, such as 'impressed', 'reception', 'negative feedback', and 'strict measures'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'deserts' (which refers to arid regions) instead of 'desserts' (the sweet course), and 'how types of deserts' which is slightly awkward phrasing. However, these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message with precision and style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I have never received a negative feedback' (feedback is an uncountable noun, so 'any' or 'such' would be better) and 'asking the client about how types of deserts' (which should be 'what types of desserts'). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong.
