Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
Last Sunday, I came to your hotel for business meeting; however, the participants were dissatisfied about the food service that was served for lunch.
I arranged a business meeting at your Residence In Marriott hotel to discuss about company’s sales and productivity. The nature of staff members towards us was very welcoming and supportive. All the participants were happy about the hospitality. All the arrangements were incredibly well-organised and well-maintained. My colleagues who were part of the meeting, expressed their happiness towards staff members’ helpful nature. Hotel staff provided technological devices, which we need in our meeting, particularly computer, laptop, and projector.
Most participants were disappointed from the food service that was served during lunch. Firstly, the food that was ordered by colleagues was not exact the same one. Some of them ordered vegetarian food but everyone had the same meal, which was really disappointing. Therefore, some of them had not eaten anything.
I kindly request you to improve your food service and delivery. If this continues, no one would love to arrange a meeting at your hotel. I know that your service is always grateful but at this moment, I was also disappointed. I really appreciate it if you could consider my suggestions to improve the quality of food.
I look forward to hearing a positive response.
Yours

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state what was liked (hospitality and technical support), explain the issue with the lunch (incorrect orders and lack of dietary options), and provide a suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. However, the development of ideas is slightly repetitive, particularly in the second paragraph where 'staff members' and 'participants' are mentioned multiple times. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the food issue is more concise and that the suggestions for improvement are more specific, such as proposing a pre-order confirmation system.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the positive feedback from the complaint. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Therefore', and 'However' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences in the second paragraph could be smoother. For instance, the transition from discussing the staff to the technological devices is a bit abrupt. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'dissatisfied about the food service' and 'incredibly well-organised' are appropriate. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'disappointed from the food service' (should be 'disappointed with') and 'nature of staff members' (should be 'attitude' or 'professionalism'). Additionally, 'no one would love to arrange' is slightly informal for a business letter. Expanding your range of collocations would help elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'not exact the same one' (should be 'not exactly the same') and 'technological devices, which we need' (should be 'needed'). The phrase 'I know that your service is always grateful' is an incorrect use of the adjective; 'commendable' or 'excellent' would be better. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct adjective usage.
