Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to give feedback about the services provided by your hotel on 14th August during meeting of my company in the banquet hall.

All my guests and colleagues were praising the venue of the meeting which was spacious, well-furnished, and equipped with all technical resources that are required for an official event. Moreover, the aesthetic decors of the hall, lightning and soft background music helped to maintain the focused and productive environment.

Although meal, beverage and snacks were delicious, but it was not served appropriately. The stalls of food was common for vegetarians and non-vegetarians which was an issue for some participants. Also, the temperature of the food was quite low.

I would really appreciate if your staff could serve the food separately for vegans and non-vegans. The temperature of the food should be appropriate that its aroma would fill the dining hall.

Hoping for a prompt action from you regarding this matter so that in next event of my office I will get positive responses from all attendees.

Yours sincerely,

Navpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel, explained the issues regarding the food service and temperature, and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the food issues is slightly more detailed, perhaps by mentioning the specific impact this had on your guests' experience, which would further strengthen the development of your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You have used some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'Although', to link your sentences. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some of the referencing is slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the connection between the problem and your suggested solution is more explicitly stated to enhance the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'aesthetic', 'productive environment', and 'aroma', which is appropriate for the context. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'aesthetic decors' (should be 'decor') and 'stalls of food was common' (should be 'food stations were shared'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that plural/singular agreement is consistent when discussing collective nouns like 'food' or 'decor'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'during meeting of my company' (missing an article: 'the meeting') and 'Although meal... was delicious, but it was not served' (a redundant 'but' after 'although'). Additionally, 'The temperature of the food should be appropriate that its aroma...' is slightly awkward; a better structure would be 'The temperature should be maintained so that the aroma...'. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not hinder the reader's understanding of your message.
