Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding the meeting which was recently organised by me on 21st August for the company in your hotel. The event name was ABC meeting and started from 5pm in the evening. Although the venue was great with good atmosphere, but majority of the people dislike the food.
After the meeting, questionnaire were sent to the people for the meeting feedback. Since the hotel interior, colour scheme, decoration and service were top-notch but mostly employees complaint about the food quality. To make the matter worst, not only cold dishes were served to the people but also few of the items were missed from the menu, which was totally dissatisfactory. Additionally the chicken curry was tasteless. However, background music was upto the normal range which allows employees to communicate easily.
I would like you to personally look into this matter to help parties to enjoy their leisure time without any trouble. Similarly, the food temperature must be checked before serving the meal followed by the exact dishes from the menu.
I would like to resolve this issue and provide some assistance for the inconvenience caused. I will look forward to hearing from you soon.
Thanks
XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: mentioning the positive aspects of the hotel, explaining the issues with the food, and suggesting improvements. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the suggestion for improvement is a bit brief and could have been expanded to be more persuasive. Additionally, there is a factual inconsistency regarding the timing of the meeting (you mention it started at 5pm, but the prompt specifies an 'all-day meeting'). Ensuring that your details align with the prompt is crucial for a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'Similarly' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. For example, the transition to the final paragraph is a bit abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the progression of ideas is smoother throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'top-notch', 'dissatisfactory', and 'inconvenience'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'make the matter worst' (should be 'worse') and 'upto the normal range' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the precision or sophistication required for higher band scores. Expanding your repertoire of formal business-related collocations would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'questionnaire were sent' (subject-verb agreement error), 'majority of the people dislike' (tense inconsistency), and 'which allows employees' (should be 'allowed'). Additionally, the sentence 'Although the venue was great with good atmosphere, but majority of the people dislike the food' contains a redundant conjunction ('Although' and 'but'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
