Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing to provide some feedback about the all day meeting that i recently organised for my company at your hotel.
Overall, the participants were very pleased with the hotel and its facilities. They particularly liked the meeting room, which was spacious, comfortable and well equipped. The staff were also friendly and helpful throughout the day. In addition, the hotel was in a convenient location, making it easy for everyone to reach the venue.
However, the main complaint was about lunch that was served. several participants felt that the food was not fresh enough and that there was not enough variety. The main dishes were very few vegetarian option, which caused difficulty for some members of group. As lunch was an important part of the meeting, this had a negative effect on the overall experience.
I would suggest that the hotel provide a wider range of fresh dishes in future, including both vegetarian and non vegetarian option. It would also be helpful to serve the food at the correct temperature.
Despite this issue, we were satisfied

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly state what was liked (meeting room, staff, location), explain the issues with the food (lack of freshness, variety, and temperature), and provide constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task. To reach a higher band, ensure the closing is complete, as the letter ends abruptly with 'we were satisfied', which is grammatically incomplete and leaves the reader hanging.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Despite this issue' to link your thoughts. However, the cohesion is occasionally mechanical, and the final sentence is incomplete, which disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring all sentences are finished would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'facilities', 'convenient location', and 'negative effect'. There are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'very few vegetarian option' (should be 'options') and 'non vegetarian option' (should be 'options'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations and ensuring correct pluralization would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as the lowercase 'i' in 'i recently organised', the missing article in 'about lunch that was served' (should be 'the lunch'), and the incomplete final sentence. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic errors like capitalization, articles, and sentence completion will significantly improve your accuracy.
