Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide feedback about the meeting we recently organised at your hotel.

The participants were particularly pleased with the clean facilities, but they were unhappy with the food served for lunch. In addition, they were so happy about the comfortable meeting room which includes all the necessary facilities such as projector and proper audio- video system.

Unfortunately, the participants were disappointed with the lunch because there were limited vegetarian options and the food was cold. As a result, some participants were unable to enjoy their lunch and remained hungry during the afternoon session.

I would request the manager to improve the food service in the future by offering a wider range of meals. In addition, I request manager to ask about the dietary requirements from the clients to make the things easy for clients and the hotel staff.

I hope you will take these suggestions into consideration and improve the quality of the food for future events. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Anuj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel (cleanliness and facilities), explained the specific issues with the lunch (cold food and lack of vegetarian options), and provided constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the positive feedback and the complaint is slightly more fluid, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Unfortunately', and 'As a result' to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between the positive comments and the negative feedback is less abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'facilities', 'disappointed', and 'dietary requirements' correctly. The language is generally natural and appropriate for a formal business context. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations. For example, instead of saying 'make the things easy', you could use 'streamline the process'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more varied adjectives and adverbs would help elevate the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically accurate. However, there are a few minor errors, such as missing articles (e.g., 'I request manager' should be 'I request the manager') and slightly awkward phrasing (e.g., 'make the things easy'). These errors are infrequent and do not cause confusion for the reader. To achieve a higher score, focus on consistent article usage and refining your control over complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
