Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to appreciate your diligent efforts for making our company's all-day meeting successful and would like to suggest some improvements that you should consider for food in future bookings.

My company Kangaroo Studies Private Limited, organized an all-day staff meeting in your hotel last week and after returning in office next day our boss asked for the feedback including services from your hotel. To my surprise, my staff was extremely happy with the seating arrangements as it was comfortable for them to sit for those long hours to discuss the project and everybody liked the lighting provided in the conference room as well as the projector facility to present their orientation.

On the contrary, participants were not satisfied with their lunch as buffet only included Mexican cuisines and most of the food was non-vegetarian; therefore, there was less choices for vegetarian people. Luckily they got an idea of ordering food online from Uber Eats and it got delivered so soon. Otherwise it was difficult for them to survive whole day.

I would like to suggest confirming food menu in advance from executives who organize their events in your hotel as it would not only provide them with their selected options but your service rating can also be improved.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Rajwinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the positive aspects of the hotel (seating and lighting), explained the issue with the lunch (lack of vegetarian options and limited cuisine variety), and provided a constructive suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more formal; for example, phrases like 'difficult for them to survive' are a bit hyperbolic for a business context. Overall, the response is well-developed and fully satisfies the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the contrary' and 'therefore' to link ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph flows naturally into the next would help elevate this score to the next level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'diligent efforts,' 'orientation,' and 'cuisine.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it is somewhat functional rather than sophisticated. There are a few minor collocation issues, such as 'returning in office' (should be 'returning to the office') and 'confirming food menu' (should be 'confirming the food menu'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items that fit the formal business context of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'buffet only included' (missing an article: 'the buffet') and 'there was less choices' (should be 'fewer choices' as choices are countable). Additionally, punctuation could be refined, particularly regarding comma usage in complex sentences. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
